| They're actually a good species to mix with larger cichlids in a tank large enough for them to move around freely. I had one many, many years ago in a tank with a pair of African butterfly fish and a small bicher. The Leporinus actually ate out the belly of the female butterfly fish, a little nibble at a time, while the butterfly fish seemed unaware of what was happening. By the time I saw it the butterfly fish was damaged beyond saving. What was worse, she was full of eggs and would have spawned soon. The reference book I had at the time listed the Leporinus as a vegetarian, so I didn't expect any problems with the other fish. |
