This was alleged to be a male Kenyi. Looking around a few days ago found out it was holding. It looks like a Kenyi it was blueish when young and started turning yellowish so I assumed was a male.

Interesting. Zowie717 had the same question on 14/7 07.11

After some research, i found this in one of my books, and confirmed it (I think) on google search. I think what you have there is a female Melanochromis johannii

see...........

Its not a johanni, the males are blue with the stripe going horizontally and the females are yellow with the stripe the same as the male.

If its holding right now there is a chance of it being a type of afra or hongi.
Do you have an in tank pic? If I could see the fish's mouth from the front I can tell you. Afras and hongi's have a destinct mouth.

Pics

This are the best pics I could take Angela. I just check and is not holding anymore. I put him/her on a floating tank to take the pics and while it was there it was challenging a female Kenyi. When you take a pic looks light blueish but on the tank is yellowish. When I got them they were all blue and this one turn yellowish.

First thing came across was Pseudotropheus lombardoi. Maybe from specific location or cross bred several generation b/n species from different location or even with other species. No one will know for sure.

Since pics wont do justice, check its lining of mouth against Petrotilapia Sp also. It doesnt look like Petro but doesnt hurt to check. Hey! Thats how I got to know and drove me to obtain most Rift Valley cichlids.

If it is lomb, very nicely/distinctively colored female than what I have experienced.

Godd luck with the clutch!

I think it has to be a Male Kenyi. Maybe it had food on the mouth when I check him up and thought it was holding. What about the lining of the mouth?

Google for Petrotilapia and also for Labeotropheus fuellerborni and trewavasae. Should be able to pics of their distinct characteristics.

btw, lombardoi=kenyi, from old school. They do have different characteristic/colors depending on its locations (at least with wild specimen).

Then lombardoi,I guess. Now you know of Petros or Labeos, why not go for more variety and breed?
Like I said, that's how I got to keep/spawn just about most african as they were avail to hobby (mostly wild sp), sometimes leaving big hole in my pocket!
As far as most common Rift Valley Cichlids (mixed African Cichlids), done since early to mid 80's since got tired of trying to ID cross breds although sometimes crossbred are more beautiful than its parents.

Yeap. I just moved today a Pseudo Acei to the floating tank I made with PVC piping and the stuff we use to divide tanks and I went to check on her and she spit her fry already. More little boogers.

I am still thinking kenyi, the pseudo lombardi and the metriclima lombardi are the same. There is so many people that will call them different there is even the malanda lombardi out there all are kenyi.

I go with the Konings names, Metriclima.
Here is my male kenyi:
http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/me...7-100-1514.jpg

He is well over 4 inches long and well over a year old (im thinking he is at least 2, I have had him a year and a half and he was going through the teenage half blue/yellow when I got him)

Yeap mine were all blue when I got them and the only one that is yellowish is this one. Good to know that is Male because that would mean another fish I have to get. Hard to find when you are looking for a specific fish. So far I put him back again on the main tank and the female Kenyi started chasing him. It was funny like a wife mad at the husband for not showing up after a few days.
