Re: Identify Unknown Fish

There were a couple in my book that are possibilities:

Apistogramma hippolytae or Empress Dwarf Cichlid

Nannacara aureocephalus or Golden-head Dwarf Cichlid

Re: Identify Unknown Fish

thank you, i have 3 LFS by me and the one that sold it to me said it was a banded geophagus. There isn't one. The other 2 could not identify it. I am trying to figure out how big it will grow.

Re: Identify Unknown Fish

The first one listed is stated to reach 6 cm, and the second one listed at 8 cm.

Re: Identify Unknown Fish

It is not an apisto.
Is there any type of darker spot on the side of the body, it is hard to tell from the picture.
The picture is a good one, don't get me wrong.
It is for sure a species from South America.
How long is the fish at the present time?

The problem with buying fish like that , is that a great many of the SA cichlids look very similar when they are younger and can only be identified once they start to show adult color.

I have my doubts it being a geophagus, due to the structure of the head above the eye and lack of an enlongated mouth.

Re: Identify Unknown Fish

It could be a very faded microgeophagus altisponus (Bolivian Ram)

It is deffinatly closely related to the geophagus', maybe a young specimen.
