Can someone tell me what these are please.

Hi,

I got these the other day but forgot to ask what they were. So i called the LFS today and they said they where "flamentosus" but when i type it in the search on the net, nothing comes up except for some algae spelt nearly the same. They cost me $30 each m and f, so i wanna know what they are.

.
.

thanks
marty

Used to be called Crenicara filamentosa but I guess their Genus has changed. They are beautiful but bit sensitive. Whatever you do, try avoiding massive water changes with staight tap even with dechlorinator. Aged water and/or clean rain water should be OK provided their water chemistry is w/in reason . I would not tempt to keep them in extreme pH (very hard and alkaline or very very acidic) upon someone's recommendation who never kept these fish that fish will adpat. Some may but most have not from my experiences with C. filamentosa. I had very good results when kept around 6.6 but dont have to be exact. Just aroung that level w/o sudden changes. Very peaceful Dwarf Cichlid (somewhat shy compared to GBR) and should be kept in numbers and in well established tank, especially in well planted tank.

How much is Aus $30 in US Currency? Used to be around $6/ea when avail. Unfortunately due to their sensitivity, not too many stores will bring them in, especially wild fish in box lot.

Enjoy them as I have. Good Luck!

Im not sure to be exact but $30 aus is about $20 give or take a few dollars, the shop i got em at do charge a bit more for their fish, but iv never had any problems with them, my water is about 7ph, they seem to be doing fine. The seem to have paired up quite well as well. I hope they find a spot somewhere to lay some eggs.

Glad your still having fun with this post. They are a great fish. I'll also say this, i think they are one of the fastest fish you can get. i got another one coz i thought i had 2 females already so i got whati thought was a male, but the bigger one i had in my tank went nuts and started flaring up and stuff infront of the new one, and when it was getting chased, iv never seen fish move so fast, infact too fast to follow, was a crazy speed. i ended up returning that fish and swapping it for a cactuoides that only lasted a week
