barb id please

can somone id these please? sorry pics aren't the greatest..
first is 'moe'-silver with a blue shimmer in the light, has a black spot over gold bar near tail fin.Top fin has black markings like an odessa barb? A pinky/red spot/bar on nose.Quite feisty,.

And 'muff' is silver without the blue shimmer, red nose and no markings in top fin.Has the same black spot over gold bar on tail.

They schooled well with rosys when i had em and now hang with a pair of checker barbs and a heap of tiger barbs, but somtimes 'moe' will chase everyone away except 'muff'.

Thanks

Welcome to Fishlore Silva!

It's a Rosy Barb, Puntius conchonius. In the old days they came only in an orange/pink like color. I've seen some variations recently at one LFS.

Quite beautiful fish.

I found this http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile...ycter+&id=1251
One of mine look exactly like these 'lipstick barbs' But my other one doesn't have the coloring of the ones on that page.

Hello Silva and welcome to fishlore
Its hard to say, after looking at the link you supplied. Its very possible that they are one and the same fish. I really do not remember my rosy barbs with such a red/pink spot on the tip of their nose's. Both species have the tell tale diamond black spot by the tailfin. If one is more colorful than the other, most likely it is a male, as the females are less colorful. Can you ask the fish store where you got them from what type of Barb they are, they should know?

hi capekate, the lfs i got em from closed down so no answers there, when i had rosys they were top half gold and bottom half green, they didn't have the red lip but the spot is the same. For how long Ive had em they should be a lot bigger now if they were rosys i think. the link says fully grown at 4cm and mine aren't far from that. The nose on my one looks more like this tho: http://www.jjphoto.dk/fish_archive/a...ius_puntio.htm.
thanks.

Hi Silva, I tend to agree with you, with the red nose/lips like on your barbs, they just do not look like Rosy Barbs to me either. Is there some way you can try for a few more photos? The ones you have in the first post make IDing a bit difficult. And maybe a clearer photo showing the coloring may help sort it out.
thanks!

This thread is pretty old. Dredging up old threads takes away from the newer ones that probably need more immediate attention.
Please check the dates, thanks!
