Can anyone ID this tetra?

At least I'm pretty sure it's a tetra. Been googling all night but no luck so far...

I bought three black neons today. Or I thought I did... turns out I got two black neons and this guy - he's exactly the same shape and size, just with different markings. He's kinda smokey dark grey with a dark spot on the sides behind the eyes, and then getting darker as it moves toward the tail. Very nice looking fish! The picture doesn't do it justice. There's also a hint of red or orange on top of his eyes.

Any help with identifying this would be much appreciated!

before reading your post i guessed a black neon by the picture. being that you have only had him for a day, maybe he will color up once hes settled in. he also might have a weird color variation. im guessing, but i think both ideas might be possible.

thanks namehater - I'm thinking you're right... I was watching them under the moon light and all three were settling down with exactly the same fin movements etc... the colours really are different though. The other two are clearly black neons... in the transfer bag all three were pretty much white. once they got settled in their colours came in.

it's a really nice looking fish! wish I had more room in my tank for more of these tetras...

cheers!

ps here's a different picture - blurry and it still doesn't capture it very well. it's difficult to photograph fish!

Looks like a Black Neon to me! I have 5....feed them a good diet such as good quality flake food, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp and freeze/dried bloodworms as a treat and they will show their colors!

i know exactly what you mean, i have 4 xray tetras, but one doesnt quite match the others, hes very pale. always has been and i dont foresee it changing. it did bother me at first having an 'oddball', but ive actually grown to like having an odd one.

With the red above the eyes, it almost looks like a glowlight tetra that just doesn't have all the color in the tail and dorsal fin. Could it be a cross between a black and a glowlight?

can tetras cross breed like that? cause he's definitely coloured way differently than the other two black tetras. the colour on those two has come in really nicely - with a distinct silvery bluegreen line above the black.

This tetra looks like the ink ran... very smokey colouring. but yes, same red eye almost like the black neon, and yes, similar to the glowlight...but the black neons have it too
