| What type of pleco please. I really would like to know the exact type of pleco this is please. I call him Unbar because one of his barbells looks like it got ripped of and is now growing back.. I think they grow back, right?
Thanks. Last edited by wakingupnow; March 3rd, 2009 at 01:19 AM.

| from the pictures my best guess would be a common sailfin, but it's hard to tell. can you get one with better lighting? |

| i agree, he is most probably a common or sailfin pleco, if the shop you got him from only said pleco on the label, normally this means he/she is a common one |

| I really could not be sure what it was other than a Plec which may well be a common on a very dark barground. i just could not get enough definition on the laptops tft |

| If interest in IDg plecos, try Aqualog Book or software. Alhtough it may be comonly seen pleco (if bred in captivities), but if wild batch, it can be way to obtain some rare specimen, even unidentified pleco.
Dont got too upset/frustrated in case you can not cofirm the nomenclature of fish, just enjoy as they will return the favor in colors/patterns and/or their services(?) when good care is provided. |

| Here is the best shot I could get of Unbar while he was on one of the mystery snails. he is really dark too. It's just not the camera.
He and I'm sure most of his tank mates at the LPS had nipped fins. They were in the same tank as the mollies. |

| I vote Common, too. He's very tattered. He'll need at least a 75 gal tank as he grows. |

| Have seen few different species of plecos with such dark colors to show bright and distinct colors/patterns depending on mood and water conditions or time of the day.
Common Pleco can be many different species of plecos and I am not sure which specific pleco others are refering to..
Since you are the only one who can see fish thruout the day and from different angles, you can probably determine what it is or at least narrow it down.
Try googling for Peckoltia oligospila (L-006) and Hypostomus Sp (L-166). I know. pics you might see is lot lighter than yours but keep in mind just in case your pleco does lighten up bit when well stablized in your tank. It is still pretty pleco w/ little orange spots on the fins.
Also ther are still unidentified plecos that are available along with identified pleco which maybe sold under Common Pleco, the term which i am not familiar with in many yrs of Pleco keeping..
BTW, if anyone can give me Scientific Nomenclature on so called Common Pleco, I'll see if I can find the pics or more info from books or other old (?) pleco breeders if and when possible. Is it Hypostomus punctatus by any chance? If it is, even seen few different colors/pattern variants on this species also.
Difficult task to ID pleco, isnt it? Well, another fun part of fish keeping. Last edited by cerianthus; March 6th, 2009 at 01:16 PM.

| Thanks everyone.
Eventually, when he is bigger I'm getting a much larger tank so he can roam all about.
But I'm still unsure about him being a common pleco considering his dark color. Ceranthus did suggest a few others, but I can't seem to find one that looks just like him. |
