ID these orphans

Last week I moved into a new office. Amongst the old junk, I found these two guys swimming around a 9 or 10 Gallon ratty old tank. The water was murky, half full (due to evaporation, I suppose), and without a filter or heater of any sort. I fed them a little and added water to the tank. After one week seem healthy however, I'd like to know a little more about them in order to give them a happier living arangement.

I suppose the first step is to figure out what they are.... ideas?

One more thing...

I should add that the second one is usually at the bottom and appears to me to be a catfish; he has a mustache of sorts and was a little shy for his photo.

The first one looks like some sort of danio or platy, but I really don't know. The 2nd I'd say is definitely a catfish, maybe a cory or a USD. How big is he?

I didn't think that zebra danios had striped tails... and I've never seen a striped platy, lol

I just went and looked at a bunch of pictures of Peppered Cories, you're spot on. That's one down. Now for the first one. For some reason I figured the first fish would be the easiest to identify.

If it is a zebra danio, it pretty pregnant or bloated.

The first one is definitely a zebra danio. Since danios are egg layers, she could be eggfull. Did you feed right before taking the pics? If so, it could be that she just has a belly full of food. The second one does look like a cory.

No didn't feed her. She's definitely fatter than most pictures of Zebra Danios I can find. She's also the only one in the tank (other than the Cory). Wouldn't she need a male suitor to lay eggs?

I think her dorsal fin (the top one) is actually larger than it looks in the photo. It sort of flopped down when I snapped it.

No. If it is for sure a female, she could still have eggs even without a male. The eggs are fertilized after the fact, so they won't be fertile. It could also be bloat or internal parasites since she was in less than ideal conditions. You may want to keep an eye on her to make sure she recoups okay.

Yeah. long finned seems to be the key. I just found this possible explanation for the paunch over at liveaquaria:

"Male Zebra Longfin Danios are generally more torpedo shaped, while females tend to have a larger belly."

She's a lady.

I think I know what i have now; One Longfin Zebra Danio and a Peppered Cory. My first order of business is to get a test kit and find these two a filter.

Thanks to everybody who replied so quickly.

Welcome to Fish Lore!

Nice save! How about we find the guy/gal and make them live in their dirty bathroom like they left those fish.
It's so kind of you to adopt them. Good luck.
