| Tiger Oscar Coloration i have just bought 2 tiger oscars and now they are in my 20 gallon tank. on of them is a little smaller than the other at about 1 1/2 inches and has very nice color but the other one, 2 inches, looks exactly like it but doesn't have any orange stripes. it is basically just that dark green/ black color with one small orange spot on both sides of its tail. some suggested that the pet store might have given me a different kind of fish which might be true? does anyone have any advise? thanks for your help. |

| what kind of oscar is this? please help! i just bought two new tiger oscars that are about two inches long, however onw has distinctive tiger oscar strips but the other does not. im hoping that it just hasn't had its color come in yet or something or the new transition has changed it for the moment. does anyone know if it is a tiger or not? and if not what type of oscar is it? please respond, thanks for all your help and advise |

EDIT: the secong posting did,but it's hard to see the pics.
The big 1 on top is a tiger oscar and the smaller 1 on bottom looks like an albino tiger oscar. Last edited by soldieroffortune1974; December 23rd, 2008 at 04:00 AM.

| The albinos vary in coloration. Some are red, some are yellow, some are tan. There's lot of different colors for them. The 1 in the pic, from the best I could tell was white(ish)
What color is it? |

| you probably arent going to like this but, they are both tigers and are showing the affects of ammonia unless you can get them a bigger tank asap and get it cycled fast, they are going to have some major issues... |

Almost all types of Cichlids (which Oscars are cichilds) will change color from stress, breeding, aggression, etc. When they get pale they are stressed. |

| Hi Full_Attack-05: Welcome to Fishlore. I believe we should refrain from "you have to" statements but... in this particular case this is the info I have for you:
One Oscar -alone- needs a minimum 55gal tank. Two Oscars, well... it depends. If they pair-off they could manage a somewhat smaller tank than two that don't; that said, a 100gal tank is what they need, as minimum.
They grow incredibly fast, 1 inch of fish per month, so do your math. They require excellent filtration system(s) since Oscars are one of the messiest fish in terms of bio-load.
At least, you have some searching for info and decisions to make. I suggest you visit this UK based site and read on Oscar Tank Set Up and Caring: oscarfishlover.com . Don't hesitate to ask whatever you need to. Stay tuned. Oscar keeping is very rewarding.
