cichlid?

I know the pictures are not at all good but they are the best I can do with my very old digital camera.

I was told he is a cichlid but I wonder because he lives very peacefully with a pleco which I was also told would never happen. And how well do they get along? They will hang out in the same cave with each other.

That certainly looks like a cichlid to me. I don't know much about cichlids though so I can't tell you what kind...

Thank you ladies. Wasn't too concerned with the actual type just want to make sure I was right about it being a cichlid. The tank only has two lonely fish in it... Now what the heck is going to get along with a cichlid and not eat the pleco? DOH

Rescuing a tank is never easy.

Cichlids need to be overcrowded to an extent. I would get more cichilds, you can keep w/ the lesser aggresive on the malawi list, lab species, cynatilapia afra, pseudo acei.

Keeping 1 male to at least 2 females. If the pleco is larger than the cichilds, honestly I wouldn't be concerned. I have had plecos in my cichild tanks with no issue.

How large is it right now?

Its definitely a cichlid from Malawi, very hap-like to my eyes. Most likely a female but that would really depend on the current size. I'd venture a very good guess its a Female Protomelas taeniolatus.
