African Cichlid, but what kind?
These were in a tank marked assorted African Cichlid.
I'm really interested in know what the blue one at the bottom is, but if you can ID the one above it and the yellow one that's only 1/2 in the pic. that'd be great.
Sorry, this ones blurry.
That's all I was able to get, then my batteries ran out.
Thanks for your help.

The blue and black striped one looks like a pseudotropheus elongatus. I have a trio in my tank and they are beautiful fish. The yellow one is a yellow lab....also a fantastic fish. I'm not sure what the powder blue one is but I'll look it up

Looks like a blue kenyi cichlid (Pseudotropheus lombardoi) to me. The one above it looks like an acei (Pseudotropheus sp. "Acei"). The yellow looks as a Yellow Labidochromis.

I don't think that it is an acei. Acei cichlids are a dark purple-blue color. The blue and black one looks too long bodies to be a kenyi. Kenyi's are also a lighter blue with black bars.

It is acei msuli, probably female if it stays that color.

The striped one is a female or young kenyi

Thanks everyone. They were so little and pretty.
It's easy to see why people buy them before finding out their requirements.

Yeah then a couple of months or so later & a few inches bigger they get a nasty surprise if they have the wrong mix.

I am guessing that those cichlids are from Lake Malawi in Africa.
I have seen them before, but only on the internet.. not really in real life .. YET xD

Isn't that the truth? When I first saw MissMTS identify the one as pseudotropheus elongatus I thought "Oh, boy... I gotta warn poor Lucy - she got a Henry!"

Isn't that the boy you wrote the ad for?
I didn't buy him, I took his pic so I could find out what he was first.
Very pretty, but I think I'll pass. lol
Thanks for everyone's help.

Yep! My "lonely hearts" boy. Devestatingly handsome, but meaner than a <insert southern saying about angry animal in silly situation>.
You don't necessarily have to pass on that one. It looks like the general consensus is that it's a kenyi, not an elongatus. I am no expert at IDing, particularly juveniles, so I will take their word for it. Kenyis don't have the same nasty reputation that Henrys have.

Lol, seems like I am out numbered From what I have heard from Steveangela and Allie, kenyis can be pretty mean as well.
Mousepotatoe, my elongatus is a meanie too. Luckily the other fish keep him in check, but for a while he was quite a bully. Were you never able to find some girlfriends for Henry? That might help him calm down a bit.

For what it's worth, MissMTS, I was inclined to agree with your ID until I saw the others weigh in.
Alas, I'm afraid Henry's search for love has been put on hold until after we move. I cannot move him or Eleanor into the big tank out of fear for their own safety and I can't get another big tank until after we move. Even after the move we may have to reinforce some floors if we get the historic home we want.
Eventually, I hope to have at least one more 75-125 gallon tank in which I can create my Mbuna paradise, but for now my babies must be content with the fact that I saved them from residing in the sewers.

I got a male acei. it looks exactly ligke that only a little brighter but its not purple. the otherone is not a lombardoi. it's too bright to be a female and the males turn yellow when they reach about 2 in. there not kenyi either, their Malawi (Ive got an acei and a lombardoi so I know what they look like )

After raising more than 100 kenyi fry they are really bright colored all the way up until juvie stage. Thats Why I gave the id of kenyi. THe lombardoi/kenyi are the same species
