what is this fish?

I went to the store to buy some dwarf gourmies and in the tank were what was supose to be powder blue gourmies but they had a different lepard type irridescent sheen to them in the light. They didn't have the head/body shape of the dwarf gourmies they were with either. They were a bit thicker and the fins were a little different. The pet shop said they were powder blue gourmies but they were different than the lightly striped ones that were in the tank last week.(this is a new shipment) They also have bigger eyes and a pouty mouth. They were an interesting personality too. The dwarfs they were with were different only slightly but a noticeably difference. Any idea what they are? I'd like to buy some, but want to know what they are. I can't find anything like it on the net that I have looked at.

Hi aquablue Welcome to Fish Lore

I hope you don't mind, I moved your post to the proper forum, it should get more attention here.

I'm sorry, I'm not good at IDing fish so I can't help you with your question. Other members should be along shortly that can help you.

It would probably help if you could post a pic.

Good luck.

Hello Aquablue and welcome to fishlore
I have had the blue and the gold gouramis that had a tiger like pattern to their bodies as well that really show up in certain lights. The Neon dwarf gouramis do not have this. I also believe the blue and the gold Gourami are larger than the dwarfs.

Thanks, I know most powder blue gouramis are tiger striped. When these hit the lights and only in some light there is a leopard sheen, no colour just a ghosting.

Yep it sounds like a blue gourami (powder blue), they have a lot of different names for it. They usually are a light silver blue with sorta leopard marks some are darker than others, they also have different shaped head etc. If you got one I'd only get one since they can be fin nippers and also they get about bigger over 5 inches and bigger I'm sure depending on your tank size. Heres a link to see if you think thats what it is. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3D1%26hl%3Den

The blue gourami still has kind of a stripe, I am thinking it is a opaline (blue) gourami as that is the closest thing I can find on the net. Some also call it a Cosby gourami, does this sound right? It looks like they have bred out the darker colour and the markings only show when the light hits them.
what do you think? They are in a tank with dwarf gourami's
