Mystery fish

This is my mystery fish. He is little more than 3 inches long. I've had him about a year and I have never known exactly what kind he is.

I could be wrong, but he looks kind of like a type of peacock cichlid. I'll move this post to the fish id section so that our members who are better at ID'ing cichlids can confirm or deny that.

Thanks Allie... I figured you'd know this guy and I knew I'd seen a cichlid really similiar before.

No problem. I think we've kept every type of cichlid for some period of time. I've seen quite a bit even if it was just a day or so. Rescuing fish and adopting or selling them is really how we got into all of the fish stuff.

Thank you very much for the ID. He is a cantankerous fish always chasing any other fish away from HIS barrel. He is so possessive of the thing I didn't even consider leaving it behind when I moved him to a different tank.

Cichlids are pretty territorial and kribs can be mildly aggressive.

Allie - would he be happier in a 20g with a female krib? I think 20g is what's recommended as a minimum for kribs?

Yup they are pairing fish so I am sure he'd be happier with a mate.

Cool looking fish. Glad to hear you've had him so long.

Unfortunately I do not have space for any more, or larger tanks where I am right now. He seems happy enough in the 10 gallon so I'm not going to worry about that but I think I would be overstocking the tank if I tried to stick a female krib in there with him. There are already 2 platys and a cory in there with him.

A pair does well in a 20g. Yes your 10g has enough fish in it.

Yea, the more crowded they feel, the better the chances of cichlids getting aggressive with tankmates.
