Hard to tell in that pic what his true colours are, but if I had to guess, I'd say maybe a Jack Dempsey.

HI, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

For information on the JD, AND the nitrogen cycle, you can go to the links under the heading at the top of this page, "ARTICLES",

Click on Fish Profiles and you will find a good article on Jack Dempseys. A little farther down is a very thorough article on the nitrogen cycle....If you don't test your water currently, I suggest getting the API Master test kit for freshwater (liquid), available at most pet stores, for approx $20-25...It is invaluable in keeping a healthy tank, knowing your nitrate readings, for your water changing schedule....understanding the cycle process a new tank goes through, and how to do that safely.

Enjoy this site, and tell us all about your tanks, we love new folks here!

unless this fish is a baby, like a few inches or so, its not a dempsey.at least all the ones ive seen and raised have the blue or green or both very predominant spots...but I could be wrong...

Definitely not a convict. Do you have some better pix of all views? It looks like a s/c American cichlids tho.

Maybe checking the profiles at www.cichlid-forum.com or www.fishbase.org would bring up a match?
