Help me ID this fish, so I can find him good company.

Hey Guys, someone bought me an aquarium for Christmas and I've had it since. It's a tiny biOrb, but I quickly found that to be inadequate because of it's size and difficulty to maintain. In addition the light fixture broke. Anyway, I have a fish in there, and in order to provide him with the best home, environment and company, I want to know just what kinda of fish he is. I tried looking at profiles of fish, and to me he looks like a golden barb, but he doesn't have spots, so I'm a little thrown off. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

For some reason the image Didn't work, Sorry 'bout that!

Hello and welcome to fishlore.
Its great that you want the best for your fish and its a good thing to ask questions first before going out and buying companions for it. Good for you.
Now for your question.. its really hard to be able to ID a fish without a photo. There are so many possible species it can belong to. Are you able to take a photo of him by any chance? It would be a great help.

I'm not sure what the fish is...just very worried about the red inflammed looking gills. They look painful for the little guy to breathe. Do you have any water treatment stuff ? Fish Protector, stress coat, or anything that will help it?

King Snuggles, Thanks! A genetically modified fish eh? Wow, I'm definitely against G-MO anything, but I love my fish all the same. I'll take care of him like I would a danio, thanks.

Drea, I don't know what could be wrong. The water has low/no ammonia, nitrates or nitrites, and was just changed the other day. I use all spring water for the tank. Is there anything else that I can do to help??

G-MO on the fish was painless unlike the dying, if it is something to do with religion then ill say nothing but if not read up on them google glo fish they have a website that is very informative.

glad i could help

yep definately a danio.. tangerine glofish.. King is right its completely painless to the fish.. usually its just a natural gene from jellyfish to make them glow.. try goin to glofish.com... it could help change ur mind about these fish

to help with the gills i would try doing a small water change everyday or every other day for a week or so... and add Stress Coat and Vitachem (fishie vitamins) that should help the swelling go down for whatever it could be. check into gill parasites just to be safe!

wish u all the luck with the cute little guy! oh and he'll want more danios to school with.. they love active company like others of themselves

Thanks, KittieKat! I added stress coat this morning and will buy VitaChem today. I just changed the water two days ago, so maybe I'll wait another day for the stresscoat and the vitachem to take effect. All the toxins were low/zero at last test. Thanks again for all your help.
