What is this?
I saw this at my lfs yesterday. The chap said it was a new species of 'loach' he gave some name but wasn't sure of it and anyway i can't remember it. It doesn't look much like a loach to me but more like something like the spiny eel, as the mouth is a bit like a trunk. It stayed "stiff" (as in the pic) and when the chap put his finger in to move him, he just let himself be moved.

Could be a Pangio anguillaris or like they said, a new type of loach though looks from the pic, alot like the Pangios.

My sis say it is the gold dojo, i dont think so, oh well...
When we go again we'll see if they still have. My sis has never given piece because i never let her buy it! I wasnt sure what it was + there was dead angel in there and it looked like it ate something (a fish?) because there was a bulge near it's throat. All this added with it's poise had me thinking it was some sort of snake.

R50, bucks a lot! They had 2/3 of them. I wouldn't buy it more so because i'm saving for discus but if it is a dojo my sis wants to get it for the pond.

I know it's not a dojo because the body is too thin the whole way through. Like Jacko said, it is most likely some sort of Pangio, if it is even a loach.

I'm sure it isn't a dojo because the mouth was nothing like a dojo's it had a trunk like snout just short of 1cm, i'm sure of it!

Hi Sabi
I have a photo in my Fish ID book.. which is like my other bible. lol..
Your photo looks exactly like the rope fish shown there. Does your fish have two little bristles coming off the side of the mouth? If it is a rope fish.. you can look up more photos online. The are also called, Reed fish, Snake fish.
Family: Polypteridae
Synonym: Calamoichthys Calabaricus.
Distribution: Cameroon and Nigeria.
Some behavior characteristics are : peaceful towards tankmates that are too large to swallow. Likes to burrow, active mainly at dusk and during the night. They grow up around 16 inches but are usually smaller.
hope that helps in IDing the lil guy.

After'n Kate.
I think you've hit it. Reed fish is the closest thing it looks like. Its only the snout that stcks out, but maybe i was mistaken afterall.

Great! On the photo of the rope fish, it shows a barb coming off each side of the mouth/nose area. Glad to help... what a pretty gold color they are.
