Re: Help with ID

They are some type of cichlid. I don't know the exact species.

Re: Help with ID With pics

That is a cichlid (Heros severus). One of the common names for it is the Severum.

Re: Help with ID With pics

Thanks that helped. Does anyone have experience with babies? They have settled into one side of the tank and the parents are guarding them, but do I need to worry about my Dempsey's eating them? At the moment I don't have a separate tank to separate them, but I did get a tank side net. Should I use it or will the parents be enough protection? So many questions and so slow at typing............................

The parents should protect them.

Re: Help with ID With pics

yea, the cichlids are good parents although if you could get a tank divider for your tank and put some plants, etc around it - you could eliminate any chance of one of the JDs sneaking in & grabbing a baby. if you can get a grow-out tank for the babies that would be cool or do you already have plans for getting them homes when they're old enough.

Would like to find them homes. Would they be worth any to a pet shop?

it varies - you'd have to call the local shops and see what they'd say.. a lot do give store credit.

Re: Help with ID With pics

Chances are, you'll need to grow the fry out a bit before an LFS will be interested. The good news is, they aren't as common as convicts, so they may be wanted. The bad news, chances are they'll spawn a few more times, and (if they/you successfully raise this brood) you'll be up to your eyeballs in severum fry.
It's generally best to have several tanks for growing out fry from different broods. Large Rubbermaid tubs are also usable, and much less expensive than similar-size aquiariums.

I would take some fry once they got 1 1/2 inches long to go with my 5 inch Gold Severum and Snail.

Do you have an aquarium/fish club or group near you? that might be a way to find others nearby who would like some - they are beautiful fish.
