Fish ID Please!

At my local Petcetera I was cruising for new fish, and I found a nice female betta to go with my male. However, it was "buy one get one free" so I found something else. The label said something like "Female Dwarf Gourami" but the girl in the store said that probably wasn't right, and I'm inclined to agree with her. It actually looks more like a Cichlid. It's a tan colour, with one diamond shape where the tail and body meet, and some black at the front of the dorsal. IT has some faint vertical striping that was more evident in the store. It's a little hard to see because my guppies keep stirring up the sand with their fornication.

I drew this in mspaint. I left out the, uh, side and bottom fins? Because I can't remember what they look like. I think this is more or less the markings and shape though.

Re: Fish ID Please!

It's FLOUNDER!!!

Actually I have no idea... but if it is indeed a cichlid of some kind, it's sometimes pretty tough to tell what kind until they mature a bit.

Nice drawing, though

Re: Fish ID Please!

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. Here's an updated drawing. It's about an inch long, all told, and likes to just sort of hover in one spot, near cover, like a rock or plant. So far ignores the tetras, guppies, and cory completely.

Maybe, but it's as small as the little neon tetras, and everything else is significantly bigger. Also, it's new to the tank, and the rest are established. Some cichlids are less aggressive too, aren't they? Rams for example.

Re: Fish ID Please!

Baby cichlids are not necessarily aggressive. I had a Red Jewel that I got when he was about an inch and he lived with guppies, neon tetras, Discus, and other fish without showing even a hint of aggressiveness. Then when he got to be around 2.5-3 inches, he turned into the most aggressive S.O.B. you've ever seen.

Actually I think the proper name is chocolate keyhole cichlid as they go a choclately brown colour as they mature.

I don't think so, but it sounds like it from the description you gave at the beginning.

Re: Fish ID Please!

Well my camera has problems, and he's pretty shy, not to mention the same colour as my sand.

If this is the Brown Keyhole Cichlid, it's not that, but judging by the fins etc it's pretty closely related. The spot though is definitely at the base of the tail, and it's less compressed.

The shape is actually more like this one.

Re: Fish ID Please!

I would guess it at a gold gourami. Here is a pic of one, does it look like it?

If not then I have no idea, even with a not so great picture we can probably tell what it is so if you could post a pic it would be most helpful.

Or it could be a gold barb, not likely but after looking at the paint pics, it is possible.

No, that's not a Gold Gourami. Looks like some kind of cichlid...

http://www.fishhead.com/photos.htm - you could look through the cichlids here, but it'll be time consuming with no thumbnails. Same for http://tropicalfishgallery.com/speci..._cichlids.html. You might want to check out http://www.worldcichlids.com/gallerys/ first.

That's his colouration, almost exactly. The double stripes, and the single perpendicular stripe over the eye. It's totally the wrong shape though, maybe because he's a juvenile? His shape is more like a shell dweller or something.

He's changed a lot in the past few days, I guess more comfortable in his accommodations. Unfortunately, he was starting to harass my female guppies, charging them, so I moved him into another tank with my betta pair. Since they're both a lot larger than him, he's calmed down a lot, but his colouration is still very sharp.

Looks a lot like this one, the shape is pretty similar, as are the markings. Mine isn't yellow at all, like this one, though.
