I am at a quandary over just what breed of plec I have here. It was bought as a bristlenose some 5 months ago, but has grown well since and the features just aren't there.
There are no bristles at all around the rim of the sucker, or on the nose, and it has the ability to change colour, rather like a camelion. It ranges from dark brown to a pale gravel colour, blending in with my gravel very well. None of the other plecs I have demonstrate this asset. The large fin on the back is also different to other plecs, being much more prominent. The colouring is very definitely leopard pattern and includes the eyes.
I have a feeling it is actually a leopard plec. Can anyone ID it for sure?
That's what I thought. I should take the pet shop to court for mis-representation! There's a lot of difference between a bristlenose and a sailfin... about 16"! (hank god I have my 8' tank!
True.. a 'slight' difference between the species there.. From what i hear of the flooding there, you could release him into the streets to swim around.
Hallo Timg
I bought one just like it.
I was told, it would grow no bigger than 10 cm= 4 "
It has spots all over, no bristles. at the moment about 50mm =2" long
Its name : Bristle nose-ancistrus-placostamus.
I hope this helps, It is what I was told, If I am wrong ??

The problem is with the supplier that supplies the LFS most of the time. They take what the supplier sends and very often they are incorrectly labelled, as was the situation with mine. When we bought him or her, it was only about 1 1/2" and very difficult to see just what it was at that size. We only noticed the differences when it started to grow and grow and grow and grow and grow and grow............

From what i hear talking to friends over there, you can soon release him into the streets there as the island floods.
i was thinking of shipping him down to my parents, since they are the ones who seem to have too much water, but at the moment, they are on bottled water supplies at home! as the saying goes.... "water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink!"
