FISH FOOD RECALL - PLEASE READ!!!

There is a fish food recall now of numerous types of fish foods that contain the same poisonous crap that's been killing dogs and cats... melamine.
Below are some of the affected so far but you can bet more will be added to the list. I was told last night by an employee at Petsmart that they had pulled Top Fin betta Bits off the shelves too as part of the recall. (it's not on the list below but it HAS been recalled)* If any of you are using this product or any of the others mentioned below STOP right away and return it to the store you bought it.
I have lost 2 Bettas recently and Lava has been so sick for months from a kidney infection. I would not be at all surprised if my food is also tainted with melamine!* I don't use any of the brands mentioned but many fish food manufacturers get their ingredients from the same source.* I am fed up with these idiots who are killing all our beloved pets! I am no longer feeding commercial foods to my fish. I am making homemade human grade food for them and maybe some frozen bloodworms and baby brine shrimp. I am furious to think that Lava's problems and Phlox and Whisper's deaths could have been because of the food I've given them, trusting it to be HEALTHY for them!*

The following foods have been recalled by HBH: http://www.hbhfish.com/newsrecall.htm

20002 Crab and Lobster Bites 1.3oz
11012 goldfish Bites 1.5oz
11013 Goldfish Nibblets 4.3oz
11024 Goldfish Nibblets 8.0oz
11015 Goldfish Nibblets 32oz
11016 Goldfish Nuggets 32oz
25000 Shrimp Pellets 1.6oz
25001 Shrimp Pellets 4.6oz
25002 Shrimp Pellets 9.1oz
22001 African Cichlid Attack 3.8oz
22008 African Cichlid Attack 8.0oz
22009 African Cichlid Attack 28oz
11017 Oscar Bites 1oz
11018 Oscar Grow 3.8oz
11019 Oscar Show 8oz
22012 Super Cichlid Sinkers 29oz
20007 Baby Bites 1.2oz
37019 TopFin Shrimp Pellets 4.6oz
37018 TopFin Shrimp Pellets 9.1oz

Re: FISH FOOD RECALL - PLEASE READ!!!

Thanks Phlox. Appreciate it. That infuriates me too. I have 2 dogs and was right on top of it when I heard about it with the cats and dogs. Luckily the food I fed them didn't have that in it. Luckily and hopefully none of my fish food does either. Thanks again. Natalie

Re: FISH FOOD RECALL - PLEASE READ!!!

So if you are shocked and furious that we are being affected like this remember at the ballot box that President Clinton was responsible for NAFTA which sent so much of our manufacturing, and production of consumable goods overseas.......This is the WALMART generation, BUY AMERICAN! I use Omega Sea Shrimp Pellets, Made in the USA. 4600 Sawmill Creek Rd. P. O. Box 1265 Sitka Alaska 99835, www.Omegasea.net, They are great! These are carried in our LFS, I don't know if they are shipped nation wide.

I didn't see any Hikari products in that list, so I checked my betta bio-gold, tropical micro pellets and the algae wafers that I use and all appear to be fine. Although I just saw that the micro pellets contain MSG

Re: FISH FOOD RECALL - PLEASE READ!!!

yea, we should thank her for killing our pets and economy thanks to NAFTA.

well, i have never seen "Atlantis" fish food and the only HBH product that we have is the Super Soft krill (13030). We just got it and it's not on the recall but still we're not taking chances and it goes in the trash. I will never buy products from either of these companies in the future as they show no regard for the welfare of our pets.

Re: FISH FOOD RECALL - PLEASE READ!!!

You have to remember this is a "voluntary" recall. Just because something is not on the list does not mean it is safe. All it means is that company may not want to volunteer to lose millions of $$ in a recall.* Also, just because something is made in the US or Canada or Europe etc. does not mean they don't use wheat products imported from China. Anything that contains wheat or wheat gluten is suspect. (That includes the food WE eat!) I have thrown out EVERYTHING I have including the Hikari products. All I have left is freeze-dried bloodworms and daphnia which contains nothing but bloodworms and daphnia. This weekend I am whipping up a batch of homemade food using pureed raw shrimp, peas, vitamins and spirulina powder. I'll freeze it in small batches and they'll get that alternating with bloodworms, peas, and maybe I'll grow some sea monkeys for an occasional treat.
Everyone ate some bloodworms last night except Lava who looked so disappointed when he saw what I dropped in for him. He was looking forward to dinner and then he gets a yucky worm...* He turned his nose up at it and swam away sulking. I was surprised the others gave it a chance and actually ate it. They never did before. Angel and Aenara LOVED them and slurped them up like spagetti.* Karma and Daphne ate them too and then both of them became constipated with long thin white poo hanging from them. I'm guessing the bloodworms did it. I gave them pea this morning. I'll have to try soaking the bloodworms in garlic guard for Lava and see if that helps. He can be very stubborn with food. When I first got him he didn't eat at all for the first 10 days. Then he finally tried the pellets and liked them.

i'd be ok with them. I'll get rid of stuff from those 2 companies and if i had any top fin stuff i'd toss it, but at this point, i'm not ready to chunk all of the over a dozen fish foods we have.

thank her?

and it might be noted that this isn't something we can really link to NAFTA, but the fact that we (consumers as a group - not fish forum folks) demand quality but do not want to pay for it. People would rather shop at wal mart for a gallon of milk and tube socks instead of supporting their local farmers market.

The dollars that we spend on local free trade and organics will speak louder than anything.

Elize in Hong Kong

Please can you share some ideas around the human grade food that can be used for our fish pets.

Is dried bloodworm any good to use at all - if so how much - the tin I have is made up of small little blocks of food - how many times and how much can I give

Many thanks

Re: FISH FOOD RECALL - PLEASE READ!!!

the best way to feed dried bloodworms would be to collect a little tank water in a small dish and soak the bloodworms in it for a little while, then feed 2 or 3 of them to each Betta.

Thanks for letting us know Phloxface. I am sick and tired of pet supply manufacturers who have no regard for the well being of our pets.

Are Omega One and Hikari safe as far as everyone knows? Those are the only two brands of food I use.

Re: FISH FOOD RECALL - PLEASE READ!!!

I don't mean to be political, but this kind of misinformation is a trigger for me. The poisoned food issue is a result of ingredients imported from (as far as has been determined) China. NAFTA, on the other hand, is the North American Free Trade Agreement -- nothing to do with China, nor with the poisoned pet food issue.

The NAFTA partners include Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and negotiations were in fact conducted under Reagan, not Clinton. And Clinton was a he - not a she.

All 3 of these nations have been affected by the crisis -- but the path is from foods formulated in the U.S. using ingredients imported from China, then exported to the other two countries. In short - people in glass houses...

Once again ... I hate getting political and I have no doubt that there are probably rules governing this, but I didn't start it.

If it has it then it should be listed in the ingredients list.
