How much?

Is there a general rule of thumb for feeding fish? When I only had a few it was easy enough to tell if each one got a helping.

Now I have 5 zebra danios and one striped panchax.

I usually serve a generous portion of flake food early in the day and it appears to all be eaten over a few minutes. Later in the day I serve some dried bloodworms to the planchax as he is a carnivore. It seems like as long as I kept feeding them to him he would eat them. He will take them from my fingers.

How do you know if your fish are getting too much or two little?

hi I have learned that a little, more times a day is better then a generous amount at one time. With the generous portions, a lot sinks to the bottom of the tank, with a little you can actually see how much is being eaten.

our fishes would love to eat every time we come near the tank, lol. Its not healthy for them, to cave in to their manipulative sweetness. I look up at the surface thru the tank glass to actually see how much is really there. I would feed in the morning and evening. And not feed so much that most is sinking before they can eat it. Thats how I can tell if Im over-feeding ( and I have done it) now. Hope others have more advice concerning the panchax

* fish get fat with to much food, and thin with too little, among some other serious ailments due to food consumption amounts like swim bladder disorder ( most common).

Fish are opportunistic feeders (generally). He will eat a lot....if his tummy seems full...or rounded he has had plenty. The need to gorge themselves is in their genes!!!...in the wild you don't get fed well everyday.

That's a good point Ted. I had not thought about it that way before.

Like Mare said smaller meals are better than one big one. The main thing is to avoid having uneaten food rotting on the bottom of the tank.
