I use the golden pearls (rotifers) and the decapsulated shrimp for my fry. They love them and you get a huge amount

I ordered a bunch of small sample size packs from a member of plantedtank.net.
He buys all of Kens food and repackages into much smaller packages. I wanted to try before I buy so I ordered different varieties from him for my Cardinals.
I got the following-
Decapsulated brine shrimp eggs
Arctic Copepods
Daphnia
4 flake frenzy
color flakes
no carb micro pellets

By far the fish like 4 flake frenzy the best. Daphnia and the micro pellets are tied for second. They wont even touch the BSE and copepods.
Visionquest28 is the seller over there and is wonderful to deal with. Total for all of the trial size pouches was $9.00 including shipping. Its a nice way to try some of the stuff without having to get the giant size. If your interested here a link...I will also mention fishlore to him/her.Please note you have to hjoin the forum to access swap and shop so the link may not work.

All my cories and BNs love kens catfish pellets....I got loads of baby peppered cories to prove that out of just three little cories to begin with. I like kens crumbles and I got the growth crumbles and color crumbles...I do better with these and don't seem to overfeed as bad and if I do I don't have a cloudy tank. Those golden pearls WOW I love to watch the babies eat them and see their tummies turn just as gold as the pearls themselves. Of course that is not all the foods that I get from Kens but those are on the top of my list. They way things are multiplying around here I think my next order will be a bulk order since everything is packaged so well and stays fresh.

Good morning. I just want to elaborate on Shawnie's post #23. I get my filter media (filter floss) from WalMart as well. I use the "High Loft" batting material from the craft department. It's 100% poly and no additives. The label on the package is green. It can be cut to fit your filter very easily. I've never boiled it though.
Have a great weekend!

LOL Same here Ken. That is what I use but I never thought to boil it. Hey Shawnie apparently it is okay if you don't have time to boil your filter floss from now on....just to save you some time anyway.

lol ..my main reason to always include the boiling, is that will let some new fish keepers know if it has dyes or perfumes that they may have missed...boiling with either will turn the water colors, or you will smell it in the boiling state ...my bag of backing is also green hahah ...

I guess after standing in Walmart for over an hour in the craft department reading every label there was on any type of batting or stuffing to make super sure that it had no fire retardant or perfumes I felt pretty safe. Of course now I went back and forth a couple of times just to double check that one extra time, literally I did. But I do get your point you would definitely smell it or see it if you boiled it and I would rather do that than murder my fish.

You guys are so awesome! I am really excited about placing an order from Ken's now...I love finding something that my fish go crazy for! My cories seem to hate the algae wafers that I give them now, so I am sure they will be thrilled to have something new.

And since I have sooooo many platy/molly fry I definitely plan on getting some stuff for them specifically. Right now they go NUTS over seaweed and it is quite a sight to see 20+ fry all swarming a small piece of seaweed!

I will also search out the walmart green bagged batting! I've looked at that kind of stuff before but wasn't sure if it was safe to use...the money that I will save on traditional filters may actually enable me to get....big shocker....another tank!

I just placed my monthly order with Ken, this time i decided to ring home to see what he suggested for each of my fish rather than being overwhelmed with the choices. This is what he said for MY fish (yours maybe different).

Oscar (7-8")/Jaguar cichlids (7-12")/JD (4-7") - He recommended the 5.5mm floating cichlid pellets (he gave me a choice of pellets or sticks, my personal preference is pellets) big enough for the biggest jag but the smaller JDs could also eat them with out struggling.

catfish (unknown sp. 12"), tire track eel (18"), cory cats, RTS, Synodontis eruptus - 9.5mm aquastable sinking pellet, They are a big pellet but don't break up very fast therefore they don't pollute the water as quick or sink into the gravel is what Ken told me.

BN's/L226/any pleco - Vegetable sticks with calcium - apparently very popular with those breeding plecos, the added calcium seem to help produce healthier stronger fry. Also, earthworm sticks for the added protein ( i also got these as the tire track eel has a soft spot of earthworms to the point it use to be all he ate!)

I bought golden pearls for the betta fry at 5-50 microns and for the JD/Jag/African cichlids at 200-300 microns (about the same size as BBS)

I always buy spirulina flakes as i add them into the home made food we make, this time i bought the spirulina flakes with added garlic and paprika. I also bought the betta pellets to try and see how well my bettas do on these.

Wow 8lb of food to last the month not counting the home made food they get every morning!

I recommend ringing him, he is very helpful on the phone and knows all of the food he sells well if you are unsure of what to get.

Again the foods i mentioned above are what he recommended for MY fish with regard to size of pellet and choices in food.

Wow awesome.
I didn't know you bred JD's...or at least I don't remember if I did.
Are they Blue's or regular?

Off topic but, I breed regular JDs, BGJD and just had the first batch of EBJDs born but they are far to young (less than 24 hours free swimming) to get overly excited.

Anna,

I may have to give him a call as well, that is great that he is so helpful! I love JD's, how can you talk of all your babies without a pic? Especially of the little day old babies!!

Thanks!

Anna I found him to be very helpful also.
I still love my Omega one foods and use Kens to supplement and supply a variety.
I mainly use the things that fry can eat as Omega One doesn't have anything like that.

Yeah, I need to start looking into that. It def. sounds like a good idea - since my Oscars are eating me out of house & home.

I don't have it set up yet.
As we're waiting for electricians to come out & ground the wires. And then I have to go buy jacks for the floor. Been busy, busy, busy with class & getting a car.
