| Do you feed veggies to your fish? Do you feed veggies to your fish? If so what do you feed them and how do you prepare it? And how often do you feed it?
I have put a lettuce leaf in my tank and microwaved spinach... but that is about all I have tried. I'm just interested to hear other peoples experiences feeding their fish veggies.
Right now I primarily feed flake with occasion blood worm and lettuce now and then... but I'd like to branch out and try some new things for my fish. Any interesting advice would be great. |

I never even thought of that. And I used to make my own baby food when my son was young; by cooking his veggies, etc. then freezing the puree in ice cube trays. It was easy then to pull out how much I needed and be able to adjust his serving size just by adding an extra cube. |

| Thanks for all the input guys...
Dou you cook the zucchini or just put raw slices in? I'm making some for dinner tonight and it would be easy to just toss a slice in while I'm making dinner.
What about corn? Has anyone tried that? I know a friend of mine uses it as bait when he's fishing...but he's not trying to provide nutrition and comfort for the fish. It seems like it might be a little tough for the fish.
I put some lettuce in a couple of days ago and they have just ignored it. I think they liked the spinach better. |

| I dont cook mine but others do...so its probably a personal preference because to my fish, it doesnt make a difference
as far as corn, i dont think it would be good as it has a ton of sugar and starch....im sure other members will have an opinion |

someone here also mixed everything up and then put it in a pan with a scrambled egg mixed in it to hold it together....either works as long as you use something because once it thaws, its mud without it |

| ah, ok. so when you put it in the tank it stays like the shape of the cube bobbing around?
is the plain gelatin like a powder? the stuff in the canning/jam making section of the grocery store?
im making some food for the fishies today. had a fridge malfunction and a lot of my produce got ice crystals on it. so im making veggie soup for the family and figured i would do the same for the fishies.
also what is the daphnia and spirulina for nutrient wise? and where would i get them?
thanks. |

It seems like carrots would be a little difficult for them to eat... so I guess you steam them first? Or do you just grate them? I keep lots of carrots around for my guinea pig... but I never thought about feeding them to the fish. |

| Hey Shawnie,
How much of each do you mix up? I have a ton of diff kinds of fish foods and I like the idea of feeding them more veggies. My molly and platy love zuchini, they didn't seem to thrilled about cucumber though. But I noticed that when I hang a zuch in the tank it will clog up the filter if I leave to long. So I take it out in 2 days regardless if it's all gone or not. |

| if you feed fresh veggies, they shouldnt be in longer than overnight...12 hours or so is good...then remove the leftover....as far as making your own foods, I dont measure I just throw stuff in to the consistency that is like a paste ...usually a few slices of each veggie, handful of pellets, few tsps of flakes etc... |

| My silver dollars love leaf lettuce, I give them a little every other day or so. I tried a cucumber slice, everybody ignored it except the CAE went over it a time or two. We'll have fresh zuchini in the garden by next week, squash too. I'm looking forward to trying those. |

| ive tried feeding my clown loaches cucumber but they totally ignore it...!
other than that i have oscars and blood parrots so i believe veggies are not the order of the day...
i do have a couple of tinfoil barbs but astonishly they just wont come to the surface to eat...ive had luck feeding them only with sinking pellets...feeding them spinach would cause a lot of smug because for spinach to sink ill have to boil it up and throw it in the tank...before it reaches the bottom it would be all over the tank and might clog the filter |
