Brine Shrimp Hatchery Information!

Hey all,

here is some information i have gathered from personal experience on how to use a "San Fransisco Bay brine shrimp Hatchery".http://www.f3images.com/IMD/250/SB1111/SB1111_99.jpg

First fill the bottom compartment and the collection cup with water (out of tap water is excellent for these guys). Then add the eggs to the bottom compartment and put the lid on also tap the top of the collection cup gently.

Depending on water temperature the eggs will hatch between 18-24 hours. A personal tip is to have a small desk lamp over the eggs so it keeps the water nice and warm.

When the eggs have hatched then just let them stay in the collection cup for a while until they have grown a bit bigger and then feed them to your fish.

I Hope You Guys Have As Much Success As I am Having. I currently have BBS in my hatchery they just hatched this mornin'.

-Matt

P.S. To anyone who reads this that has children who have "Sea Monkeys" you should know that they are just brine shrimp but they are called another name and it is alot cheaper to get a hatchery then a "sea monkeys setup"

Hey Matt
I moved your thread from the SW section since many FW fish enjoy BBS too. This is really good for fry and tadpoles.
I recently bought one of these and they're super easy.

MM - go to this sight ( http://www.kensfish.com/kensspecialtyfood.html )and scroll down until you come to decapsulated brine shrimp.

I use these with the fry, as i don't constantly need to have a shrimp hatchery going.

All you have to do with these is sprinkle them onto the top of the water and they come to life, they have had the shells removed so they are very nutritious and instant. You don't even need salt water with these.

I have a quick question on this style of hatchery. I have a toms in tank one which works great when the shrimp goto the correct side of it and I also have one of the 2 liter bottles ones which also work great cept its a pain to get just the baby shrimp out with out getting a ton of egg shells.

Does this style hatchery work well in getting the shrimp in the collection cup without getting tons of egg mess in there?

Just wondering because these things are a pain and so recently I have just be using decapsulated eggs instead of running the hatchery all the time.

The first couple of times I used it I didn't get any 'egg mess' but the last 2 times I did. I figured I must have done something wrong.
Filled the lower level too high or something.

I got mine and used it a few times and it was great compared to the 2-liter bottle one. It may not give quite the yield that the bottle hatchery does but I get almost no shells when I dump the cup in which I cant say with the bottle.

The time savings alone with this one made it worth it for me. Took me forever to suck the babies out and not get much for shells.

The one thing I did notice with this latch batch of fry I had is that when I kept 2 hatcherys going and could feed the fry 24/7 with BBS their growth rate skyrocketed. So much so I was afraid to add new fry to my fry tank because the fry could likely eat them if that says how fast they grew.

Much better than flake or worms for raising fry that are big enough to star out eating BBS.
