Oil slick like water

I have noticed during the past few weeks that a layer of clear swirlly like substance has been forming on the surface. This can be from the new food I have been feeding my fish. I noticed today during feeding time a smoke like swril started to appear and head towards the surface of the water. I was wondering if this can cause problems with water quality. I did notice that the breeder box where three swordtail fry are living also have the same slick in their area. This is odd as I do not feed them the same food as the community tank. I am feeding them Tetramin Tropical Crisps.
Let me know your expereince with this product.
and how to deal with the oil like texture on the surface of the water.

Sounds like a protein skim. Have you been feeding any type of blood worms or shrimp?
If ever in doubt/concerned about anything a water change is a good first line of defense.

What kind of water conditioner are you using? I have noticed along with other fish friends that Prime causes a weird looking surface on the water......

When I added stress coat the other day..I noticed a wierd film like substance on top of the water in the five gallon bucket i was using to do a waterchange..It might just be your water conditioner.

more airation keeps that at bay...a bubble wand or something to that effect...most conditioners and food leave that film if not enough water is circulating at the top
