Lead weights

Would the lead weights used for fishing harm my fish? I came up with this idea. Put a skewer(the kind for k'bobs) throught a thick piece of zuccinie or similar veggie, then tie a long string or fishing line to it, and then tie a lead weight or two to the skewer to make it sink.

I once purchased "aquarium safe" labeled lead strips for weighting plants. They lasted less than a week in my tank; after thinking it trough I came to the conclusion that lead is highly toxic (e.g. Romans got sick by drinking in lead vases). As a rule of thumb all metals are non-safe to fish.

There are nice "clips" you can use to hold veggies in the tank (I just place a stone or two over zuccini slices or lettuce leaves).

Hope it helps

You can also stick the handle of a spoon through the zucchinni to weight it down also.

Many states are outlawing lead weights. Sporting goods stores are carrying non-lead weights. They're plastic coated things, usually, and are supposed to be neutral to the aquatic environment. Those would probably work well.

Duck shot is now stainless steel in many places. Ducks were being wounded with lead shot and dieing of lead poisoning later.

And then being eaten by other critters, which spreads the lead poisoning even further. The same scenario was happening with fish and lead jigs.

I used a wooden skewer for cucumber, nestled the top of it in a plant to hold it down.

I'll scrap the idea then. I dont fish, so I dont want to buy plastic weights for just that.

If you have some spare suction holder for heaters/filters, you can use that as well. It's what I use and the best part is moving it wherever you want: top, bottom, left or right.

Here's what mine looks like:
