Frozen food

Stupid question i know but..

I have just started making my own food for the fish to supplement the flakes they get. I keep it in the freezer so it doesn't go off, should i allow it to defrost before they eat it or just put it in the tanks frozen?

I have veggie and carnivore foods.

Thanks in advance for answering the silly question

Hi Anna
its not a silly question! I can say that for myself, I take my frozen foods and thaw them in a small bowl with a little tank water. When they are thawed I use a eye dropper to suck up the foods and feed the fish.
Some folks do throw the frozen cube in the tank as well. I prefer letting it thaw and spreading out the food to make sure that all the fish get to eat and not just a few who may be more aggressive than others.
I hope I was able to answer your question for you..

What kind of fish are you feeding and what is the food made of?

For bloodworms i thaw them out, for my homemade beefheart i throw it in frozen. Some fish might prefer it frozen, some thawed thats why i asked what fish you had. Also the makeup of the food might influence the decision.

One batch of beefheart i made was way to ground up, so i'm glad i throw it in frozen. If i threw it in thawed out it would be incredibly messy.

Thanks capekate, i usually do that for the frozen brine shrimp.

Thanks Slug, i make veggie wafers for the plecos, loaches, mbuna cichlids and who ever else want to eat them and carnivore wafers (veggie mix with beefheart, whole white fish and shrimp) for the Placidochromis sp. "Phenochilus Tanzania" and who ever else wants to try the carnivore wafers.

They are in different tanks, so having some frozen and some defrosted is not a problem.

When I make home-made fish food we feed it frozen, but I hold the cube down in the tank and rub it with my thumb until enough small bits come off that I am satisfied the fish have enough food there. So the small bits are thawed by the time the fish get to them, but the cubes are frozen. (Hope that makes sense. )

I love how there is not only one way to do things. You can take your pick and do whatever is easiest for you.

I've actually started hand feeding my discus I usually throw the beefheart in frozen but i've begun holding it just inside the water and they come up and nibble it. Its easier for them to break piece off like that. Not to mention my body heat + tank heat thaws it pretty fast. If i'm in a rush i usually just throw it in and they get to it eventually.
