Omega One vs NLS vs The Rest

I recently registered for another fish forum and I usually ask the same questions there as I do here to see if I get comparable feedback. This forum has by far been my main source of info and has yet to steer me wrong. When I asked what are the best brands of fish food on this forum a lot of people gave me feedback with Omega One. There are also a lot of other threads on this forum promoting Omega One.

When I posted on the other site they absolutely praised NLS(new Life Spectrum) and kind of put down Omega One. Saying it is high in fat and not as good a product. I'm not trying to start a forum war(sounds so lame) but I would really like to know what the best Brand is. They provided me with a lot of data to support their claims. Showing numbers of less fat percentage and less preservatives.

"Omega One has added artificial colors as well as two preservatives.

The only preservative in NLS is ethoyxyquin which has to be added to the meals by law, they do not add any other additional preservatives."

i was absolutely geared up for Omega One and i am a few days away from going home where a PetSmart is near by. I was 100% sure I was going with Omega One and this has steered me away. If you are in no way interested in this just ignore it lol. I just don't see how much different they can be.

What makes Omega One better than the rest?
Any input is appreciated.

IMO you should go for the one you feel is the best AND the one you can get at whatever store you shop at, or the one you want to buy on line. Most of the time I don't buy food online unless I am ordering other items as well. I have 6 types of food that I rotate plus frozen brine shrimp and bloodworm. I feel that if one is lacking something then one of the others will cover what is lacking. That is not to say I buy the cheap stuff or knowingly but food that I know is bad for my fish.

I use New Life Spectrum after research and IMO found that it is the best fish food by far, with Omega One in second...
Based on ingredients that are listed on fish food, in order of their content, you can usually tell which are made with fish meal... and others, like NLS is not. I believe that Omega One also does not use fish meal. Fish meal is just a filler.. its best to find a fish food that uses actual ingredients, that do not include the term 'meal' with them.

Omega One does not use fish meal. It's the number one selling point of their food.

Likely this other forum touts NLS so highly for the same reason most around here tout Prime as the best water conditioner. It's a community thing, and we learn from each other.

In the end, just going by ingredient lists, I would say that the two are pretty much neck and neck. Yes, Omega One does have two preservatives. NLS puts more supplemented foods and "extracts" (fruit and vegetable juice extract) into their food. I am not a fan of such supplementation. I prefer that I (and my pets) get proper nutrition from as whole of a source as possible.
Also, they list the animal products that go in as "whole salmon meal", which may mean that what they are getting has been further processed than what goes into Omega One's products (which are just listed as "whole salmon"). I'm not positive that there's a difference, but "meal" is one of the words that I avoid in ingredient lists (unless it is immediately preceded by the word "corn")
So in the end, Omega One has a couple of preservatives and some artificial color, but offers more natural nutrition (when applicable. There are still some supplemented nutrients), while NLS doesn't have the extra preservative and color, but feels the need to add extra vitamins and whatnot, stuff that would come in the whole fish and the spirulina and other veggies, presuming they aren't too heavily processed, or don't spend too much time between processing and drying.

Thanks Guys. Did some research of my own and found out that Omega One has more protein and that seems more important to me as well.

It's also cheaper and easier to get ahold of.

Thanks Again.

Does anyone know a uk online shop that sells the New Life Spectrum?

I've found one place but it's £10.42 excluding VAT

Any cheaper sites?

I don't know if it is just the brand of NLS, but my NLS flakes say nowhere anything about salmon meal. I am using NLS Optimum flakes, if that may make any difference...

Hi Fish Addict
I believe that the ingredients in the NLS vary with the types. So its possible that one type has the salmon meal and others do not. I have right now, the all purpose NLS pellets, it carries no salmon, but has Krill, Herring, and also lists, fish oil, Spirulina and garlic along with assorted vitamins and minerals.

Slakey,
NLS has an online site that explains this product in depth, you may be able to check there for prices and shipping. Here in the states, I paid 11.99 for a 2.83 oz( 80grams).
The online site address is:
www.nlpublish.com

Sorry, I was using salmon as an example, as it's one of the more common fish used in making fish food. It's heavy in good types of fat and protein. It was listed as an example on both the NLS website and the Omega One website, so it seemed a good example.

I apologize. I am either losing my mind or they just changed the page (I'm guessing that it's the former)
So change my statement of "salmon" to "halibut" and we'll be good.

I use the Omega One straight down the line for the simple reason they use the whole fish not fish meal. The skins of fish are suppose to be good color enhancers . When I first started using it they were the only one not putting fish meal in their foods. I see other fish food picking up that idea which is great. It's always good to have a choice of good foods to choose from.

LOL...
well.. if you change 'halibut' to.. South Antartic Krill, Herring, Squid and New Zealand Mussel protein you will have the fish ingredients of NLS foods
Im not being picky.. its just that I really like the NLS foods and would like to be precise in what is included in their product.

Privately owned Fish Stores/Pet supplies can make pretty much their own profit on these items, where as a chain store pretty much keeps it all the same price. The small store that I bought mine at usually was more expensive on their products, but the only place around here that I found NLS, other than having to go online and pay shipping costs as well. My supply is getting low and may end up having to order online anyway...
