Feeding fish fruits and vegetables?

Hi Everyone.. just a quick question. I am new to fish so i feel (pardon the pun) like a fish outta water here.. I bought my fish from 1 of 3 local pet stores.. This one store is the only one that puts fresh fruits and veggies in the fish tanks with a veggie clip. I was wondering if my fish needed this daily or is it just something they maybe do as a little treat for the fish?

Welcome to Fishlore!

Many aquarists just give their fish fresh veggies as a treat. For most fish, though, it wouldn't hurt if they got little bits of veggie more often. Your silver shark, in particular, will want a varied diet of flakes, veggies (I think, not positive on that), and freeze-dried worms/shrimp. Often, the larger fish need a wider range of foods to do well.

Looks like you've got a beautiful set of fish.

HI NAGS, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

Lots of folks here like to give their fish veggie treats....I don't know if it is more important than good quality food with variety.

If you do feed fresh veggies, be sure to wash them thoroughly, and remove after a few hours so the left overs don't foul the tank.

I just made some food which includes vegetables and protiens from raw beef heart and shrimp. You can find the receipe here, the good thing about this home made food is it also includes garlic and vitimans which are both good for fish.

By the way, when you got your fish, did you plan on upgrading to a larger tank soon? Several of your fish are suited to bigger tanks. Sometimes the people at the LFS don't pass this information on...
