Uh Oh - Did I buy the wrong thing?

Hi, I'm a newbie to this whole fish thing.
I've had a 10 gal tank with some Platys in it for 3 years and have fed them TetraMin tropical flakes and nothing else pretty much the whole time.

I read the forum post where Omega One is a better food so I went out and bought the Omega One Super Color flakes and a jar of Omega One freeze dried krill.

I opened the jar of krill and these things are huge ! I put one in the tank and the Platys are kinda pecking at it but don't seem too interested.

Is this the right stuff to give them to supplement the flakes? Or should I be feeding them something else in addition to the flakes?

i would try blanched zucchini, live black worms (always a fav), and/or thawed frozen blood worms

ive owned them and these are great for them... they really enjoy eating them all

The krill is more for carnivores like cichlids - they might eat it broke up into tiny bits but it's not something I'd feed them even though Platys eat just about anything. They really like the Omega One veggie flakes.

Thanks for the suggestions - I made a "grocery" list to take to the LFS this faternoon or tomorrow

Yeah, I think I'll save this krill for something else. I woke up this morning and thw water was cloudy. I think it was because the dried krill was floating around in there all night.

My platys love the sinking shrimp pellets made for catfish, also algae wafers broken into little pieces, peas, and freeze dried bloodworms. I feed mine Tetramin too, and spirulina (green) flakes.
They should have some king of algae and veggies in their diet.

Went to the fish store and got some frozen bloodworms.

I put a cube full in the tank (deforsted and mixed with some tank water) and the platys just watched it sink and then they swam away !

Grrrrrrr !!!

That's kind of amazing - the only thing I've ever seen our platys not eat is some diced carrot.

has any tried the tetra min tropical crisps? i went downstate this weekend and bought some. i saw the omega one , i wish i would have read this post first. i guess the crisps are probably the same as the tetra min flakes that i've always used. i also use dried bloodworms, daphnia, algae wafers (for my catfish), dried tubeflex worms. How long can all this dried food last once opened ?

I use the tropical crisps, they don't seem to mess the water as much, and I also prefer to use frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp instead of the freeze dried, as I feel they don't get constipated as badly.

The little fry in the 10 gallon are eating the bloodworms now. They slurp them up like spaghetti!

The 3 biggers guys in the 20 gallon are still kinda shy about eating the bloodworms. Maybe because I've only had them on flake food all their lives?

Yea, that must be it. As soon as they realize it's food, they'll be all for it.
