Other Food/treats

Dont ask how i found this out , but my silver dollars love eating dry cat food.
I only give them 1 each about once every 2 weeks ( hasnt hurt them so far ).
Would like to know of any other Different/exotic treats for them or other species.
Thanks

I can't resist a dare...... how did you find this out?

My personal opinion would be to watch the ingredients if it's been processed - if the fish are not omnivores I'd imagine that uneaten meat products would simply add to the bioload. Also be aware that phosphates may increase your risk of algea.

Don't feed your fish cat food or dog food. Feeding such foods to your fish could compromise their health. Your fish may well love it but unfortunately this type of pet food is not at all suitable for fish. It contains far too much fat for a fish's liver to handle. If you continue to feed this type of food to your fish, you run a very high risk of it developing liver problems which would more than likely end in a fatality. Don't feed your fish on bacon, steak, or any meat that contains lots of fat.

You can feed your fish shrimps, bloodworms, insects, earth worms, prawns, beef heart and any kind of small white fish as treats.

Thanks for that advice. They will have to go without from now.
To answer the first question , the ingrediants are similar or same as fish flakes so i tried it
For informations sake the ingrediants + analysis from box is
wholegrain cereal meat(poultry/beef and/or sheep) vegetable protein
animal tallow and/or vegetable oil fish meal essential vitamins / minerals
salt food colouring flavouring
crude protein 29%
crude fat 10%
crude fibre 3%
sodium chloride (salt) 2%
= 44%
Thanks again.

The ingredients in cat/dog food are intended for a totally different digestive system than what fish have. They could cause a lot of internal damage that wouldn't show up immediately.

Silver dollars are vegetarians and should get the majority of their diet as vegetable matter. Although they will eat meaty foods, this will cause them damage in the long run.
