Alternate Koi Fish Food

HI everyone,

I just joined the forums because I need some help with my Kois. I ran out of flake food for them and i wont be able to go get some for a few days. I was wondering what are some alternate foods i can get around my house that i could feed them. I saw on Wikipedia that peas would be a good alternative but they didnt seem to eat the outer shell of the pea.

Did you try taking the outer "shell" off and then feeding it to them (you might need to break it into smaller pieces depending on the size of the fish).

Re: Alternate Koi Fish Food

Welcome to the forums.
Koi love leafy greens. Set some water to boiling, then drop the greens in for just a few seconds. I think this breaks down the cell walls, releasing stuff that smells like food to the koi.
Chopped up zucchini. I run mine through a Magic Bullet for about five seconds, then drop it in raw. They go nuts over this. Other chopped veggies would work, too. Just make sure you vacuum, because this is a rather messy meal.
Otherwise, you can just stick them in the tank. Some koi will eat them raw. Or, if they sit for a few days, they begin to soften, and the koi become attracted to it.
Last alternative, the koi won't starve if they don't eat for a couple of days. It's actually good for them to fast a bit.
