What are some more good foods for bettas?

Right now, I'm feeding mine some kind of betta pellet made by Aqua Culture and occasionally bloodworms. Tonight, I'm going to try some little pieces of peas to see how that goes. I know brine shrimp are supposively good for bettas. If there are other foods or certain brands of food that you would reccommend, please let me know. Thanks folks!

San Fransico bay brand frozen blood worms and frozen brine shrimp. Occasionally veggie flakes by omega one. Hikari bio-gold betta pellets.

Re: What are some more good foods for bettas?

Hikari Betta Bio-Gold pellets are excellent as are Atison's Betta pellets (though they are nearly impossible to find in stores, you'd have to order online)
Freeze-dried Daphnia is a high protein and high fiber treat. Stay away from most of the other brands of pellets as they are too big and loaded with too many useless fillers like corn and wheat.
Never feed as much as the packets tell you too. It's always FAR too much. My Bettas get ONE pellet, four times a day for the females and the younger, smaller males. The larger males get 2 pellets, 3 times a day. It is best to feed less per meal and more often to prevent overstuffing them and causing constipation.
I always soak my pellets to let them expand before feeding them so there is less danger of intestinal blockage from dry pellets expending in the intestines. I soak the mornings feedings in vitamins and the evening feedings in Seachem Garlic Guard (an excellent antioxidant anti-viral and has extra vitamin C for immune health)

Re: What are some more good foods for bettas?

If you are feeding shrimp to your betta please do not give them to the betta more than 2 times weekly as after they get past the fry stage, the shrimp is too rich and not enough nutrition for a juvenile or adult betta. They need to have the more balanced foods and high protein foods like the freeze dried daphnia and bloodworms (please limit daphnia to a couple times a week also unless they are ill...daphnia is an excellent meal for sick fish). The pellets from Hikari are probably the best and most widely used and the ones from Atison's are equally nutritious for them but they are based on age of the fish. The Atison's Betta Pro is only for bettas under 6 months of age and the Atison's Betta Formula is for fish over 6 months old. They come in Large containers and it is difficult to use the food before it gets too old to use so unless you have a lot of bettas or know someone that will share with you it will probably not get all used. It looks a bit expensive but when you see how much you get, it really is not. If you were to buy most brands in that size container, you would pay much more. There is also a difference in the brands of freeze dried bloodworms. In the last bunches that I have bought I have found that some of the premium brands (SanFrancisco Bay and Omega One) have LOVELY bloodworms but they are SO BIG the bettas cannot eat them unless you crumble them. They do try because they are evidently good but they choke on them if you leave them whole. The Hikari brand is accepted as happily but are smaller and do not need to be broken up.

Hi Dave. On this one, I think it really would have been better in the betta section as it's very betta-specific. I intuitively would browse the betta section to have answers on betta food. I think the food section is perhaps aimed at species-generic questions?

i did consider that a while before moving the post here and ended up treating it as i would a sickness post and moving it higher up in the heirarchy since this section is like the sickness section & intended to cover foods for a particular species OR species-generic. a majority of food questions are for a particular fish. there are other betta-food posts in this forum and it's an attempt to keep the info together.
