breeding brine shrimp

ok i have read the post/thread on breading brine shrimp but the bottle setup seems a bit small.

can they be bread in a smallish fish tank.

my fish (all tropical) and my dads fish (goldies) just loved the frozen ones but with 4 tanks to feed frozen costs too much.

i have heard that i can bread tem in a tank as long as water is 30-32 deg cen, lots of bubbles in the tank,

what about filters(should they be used) and gravel (used or not used)

what about "cycling" do i have to cycle the tank or just dive right in

thanks in advance

Tam

Re: breeding brine shrimp

what we do to breed BBS is use one of those black boxes they sell in a BBS hatchery kit. We fill it to a little under the line with treated tap water and stir in 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt, then 1/2 teaspoon of BBS eggs. We put the lid on and stick an airstone in the box.

After about 18 hours, we just take the airstone out when we want to harvest BBS and put the little bottle container with the white lid that has a hole in it (filled with treated tap water) onto the hole in the box lid for it. We tap it until there are no airbubbles, then we have a nightlight plugged into the wall above the box that we turn on to draw the BBS up into the bottle container through the hole in the lid.. when we feel like there are enough in the bottle container, we turn the light out and feed the harvested BBS to our fry, then put the air stone back in the box to keep the water circulating until we harvest again. we can get BBS for up to 6 or 7 days easily this way.

it's the most efficient way that we've found to harvest BBS.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+112975 (the baby brine shrimp hatchery) & http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+112975 (the best eggs).

I've not personally tried it with fish other than bettas and platys, but BBS seem to be loved by most types of fish from what I can tell.

Re: breeding brine shrimp

Some people go very in depth when it comes to raising brine shrimp. I read something about blacking out one side of a divided 10/15 gal tank, and then using a "peephole"(hole cut in the black divider, another round piece of plastic tacked to it and allowed to swing) below the water level, you turn off the aerator and let the eggs rise, then open the peephole and shine in a bright light, and the eggs swim to the unblacked side, harvest them and move them to the grow out tank(grow out for brine shrimp, that is).

If you search on google, you'll find quite a bit of information, as far in depth as salinity, pH, temp, hardness, etc for them.

Personally, I'm going to try feeding daphnia moina. You can buy a starter culture of them on aquabid, or supposedly, just harvest them from a freshwater body. The advantage is that they're freshwater, so you don't have to mess with salt, or worry about raising your fresh tanks salinity.
