Frozen food defrosted, good or bad
I accidentally left my frozen blood worms and brine shrimp out last night for 10 hours and were liquid this morning. Are they still good if I re-freeze them or do I have to buy new one's?
thanks

Re: Frozen food defrosted, good or bad
Would you eat something that has been refrozen after being thawed? The answer is no, if you don't know. It isn't healthy for you or your fish or even anything else for that matter. The best thing that I found out to do is just to throw out the remander of the food.

Ya that's what I did, though it was practially a whole package, they last so long. At least it isn't expensive, only 1.60 for a sheet.

Wow, $1.60, that is cheap. I pay about $8 for a 4oz sheet of brine shrimp.

uhh at my lfs. I'll have to see how large they are but ya they are cheap if you buy sheets and not cubes and a tiny piece is all my clown goby needs and they are treats for the fw fish. I'll let you guys know how much it is but they are really cheap.

Re: Frozen food defrosted, good or bad
yep the sheets are much cheaper than the cubed servings. with the sheets you can just break off however much you need.
Carol
ps. I'm with them glad you threw it out.

Ya that's why I get them for both those reasons, much cheaper and easier to break off a nice serving.

Re: Frozen food defrosted, good or bad
Well, I on the other hand would have refrozen, or at least refrigerated them and used them asap. The reason I say this is that I can NEVER get home from the LFS store with mine still frozen. So even though they may have been out 4 hours, I still refreeze them and it is just fine. The biggest problem is that the membrane that keeps the guts in the blood worms often gives up the 'blood', so at least some of them are less full. But I have never found it made the fish sick.
Just a different way to look at it.
Still you are on a very fixed budget, and I am sure it was frustrating to have that happen.

Re: Frozen food defrosted, good or bad
hmm well these were out for 10 hours, and it was basically just a big bloody mess. I actually wasn't planning on being on a tight budget this summer but when your neighbor lets a seven year old water flowers for them when they were supposed to let you do it while they were on vacation you all of a sudden feel very frustrated and out money that you were supposed to have. I guess being 7 and the son of a dad who owns his own lawn mowing company helps.

OK, now you are stepping on toes.......my son was that 7 year old once upon a time, and we called him a Vegetation Relocation Engineer! Of course he got more in pay than other kids, and it still didn't keep him interested.
You need to put your thinking cap on You have such knowledge and interest in fish, get a state and city business license, and start a tank maintenance company. Set up tanks for companies like banks, and doctor offices .......If you are in good with your LFS, they should be willing to send work your way!.......Something.......

LOL sorry, I know some can handle it but not this kid, lets just say he's pretty clueless. It's not his fault, it's really his dad. His dad has no idea of things, he set off a real firework, the type that shoots into the skie and makes colors not a noise maker from his garage with people standing next to it, he gave his son pocket rockets at age 6 and lets him ride around the street all the time. He expanded his driveway to hold three cars across but then parks his huge truck in the street and leaves the driveway empty all day and overnight while it's snowing so when the snowplow comes by he can't plow their and when the guy leaves his truck theirs a pile of snow all around the truck. He's a bit clueless. I've thought of doing a tank mainenance company but the problem would be getting to the places. I'm just waiting until the end of august then I'm finally able to get a real job. I did get a job mowing my other neighbors lawn but it hasn't rained for over a month so the grass hasn't grown and I've only mowed it once. How do you go about getting a state and city business license, I didn't know you had to have one to setup tanks for people

Re: Frozen food defrosted, good or bad
Yes you do need a business license any time you go out and get paid for doing jobs like that. Google your state Business Licensing, usually all you have to do is to pick a name, decide what type of business you will do, like sole proprietorship, partnership or incorporate. I suggest you do this alone, so it would be a sole proprietorship. Until your business gets big, and you have employees or do actual construction in a building, that should be sufficient. Your city should have an office of business licensing also. You get your state license first, if you actually go into an office people should be willing to help you figure out what "code" will be best for what you want to do. These are numbers assigned to the type of work you want to do. You just fill out a short application, pay what ever fee they require, in Alaska it is $100/year, and you are in business. This means you have to fill out schedule C when you do your federal taxes, and if you have state taxes, you have to claim your income there as well. The good news, is that you keep all receipts for business related expenses, and take them off the amount of money you make, and the difference is what you pay taxes on.......That would mean that tank related expenses would be tax deductible! You would be so good at this, and I am sure there would be a market you could fill.......

O 100$ to start, I think I'll wait until this fall to start that up. My mom talked to a place by my house that is hiring right around my b-day in august when the college kids leave and I'll get a job their or my lfs, save up some money and look into that. Thanks for that idea, I'll look into it and see what I can find.
