Cichlids adjustment

Hi all, I want to know if someone use American cichlids Salt and if it work great to keep a good water for cichlids?

I also start a new tank 33gl and want to know if I remove my Purigen in my filter if it will speed up the first fishless Cycle?

Thanks a lot!

For African cichlids there are many products to help buffer the water for them.

For American cichlids you do not need to use salt, they just don't need it.

Yes if you take media from an existing filter and use in a new filter it will speed along the process.

welcome to fishlore!!!
I have africans and SA cichlids and no salt for me either ...its more of an old school way but some members do swear by it.....

purigen is a water buffer/polisher and you do not need it to cycle a tank with..it actually could slow it down as it removes ammonia which is needed to cycle a tank... ....what are you using to cycle your tank with? do you have fish in the tank yet or are you cycling fishless? if you fill in your aquarium info on the left side of the thread under my settings, it helps us not to have to ask so many questions...good luck!

I also did some research on the Purigen and found that some folks do think that it slowed the cycle down. Most questions were based on why would someone be using the Purigen during a fishless cycle? Its ok if your water is a little cloudy when starting the cycle ie: bacteria bloom and all.
No need to worry about the water clarity at this point and you will be doing a good water change once your tank cycles and then if you choose, you can use the purigen then.
I also read that you should not use the purigen if using any type of water condition that has the added slime coat additive as it will foul up the purigen beads.
I think that sticking with Prime when you have cycled your tank is the way to go, but thats just me. For now you do not need any water conditioner at this point in a fishless cycle.
Best of luck!
