Somedays my dominant male firemouth is really orange and other days he barely has any at all. Is this normal?

Yes this is normal. When they are being defensive they will get more coloring and when they are spawning they will color up more as well. When they are calm the colors can fade. My firemouths did that all the time.

i was wondering the same thing. the difference between one day and the next is mind-blowing as far as coloration.

They will also change coloring if the tank params get outta wack.
