Eclipse 6 Filter

I have just set up an Eclipse 6 tank.
The filter cartridge for it is a combination of carbon and a foam/floss type material, all in one.
There is a small biowheel as well.

I am used to canister filters, and making my own filtration system within the canister.

Am I able to create my own filter "cartridges" for the Eclipse 6, or is there a reason that they must be purchased ?

What I'm basically wondering is if this would work -
carbon in a mesh bag, covered by a sponge.

I still have carbon and some other of my older filter media left over, and I found it was cheaper to do the make-it-yourself style before.

Think about the path the water takes. In the eclipses, the water is taken up, across, then back down. I generally don't like the design of the carts for these filters - they are the same design as the carts that stand vertically.....

I cut 4 strips of filter pad so that they lie on their side, that way the water passes through it as is intended for the filter pad (blue to white). If I were using carbon, I'd have it in a pouch on the right side of the media compartment, between the filter pad and the wheel.
