add sponge to filter?

ok so im wondering i have a topfin 30 that im cycling my tank with right now and it has room in behind the cartrige that i believe i could fit a sponge in. now would that wreck my filter/make it not run as efficiently. or do you think it would just increase the space of the biological part. im not sure what to do im going to big als this afternoon so hopefully i decide by then.

IMO, if you can fit a sponge, GO FOR IT!
sponges are GREAT for bio-filtration. best of luck and let us know how it goes

I say do it too!
With the Topfin filters, because it only has one cartridge and it is carbon, you will have to change it out every month, and if you change it out without something else in there to keep the biological filter going, you will have a minicycle every time.

So if you can fit a sponge, do it!

aquaclear makes some of the best filters in my opinion. As far as special incerts I wouldnt add anything they usually work well on their own with the carbon filter and mesh filter.

ok the direction booklet said to buy a biomax insert for increased biological filtration. does anyone have any experience with that and is it worth it?

hey, lucky you! you went for a sponge and got an aquaclear!

anywho- bio max is aqua clears brand on bio-media so of course there going to recommend it lol. but it does come in ready sized pouches, works well, but if you can find another bio-media to fill a filter bag up with, that's cheaper, its gunna be almost the same in performance and cheaper, extra gravel works well too for biological media.

so if it's not what you would like to spend, don't. get something else.. IK fluval sells their own bulk biomedia(no idea if its cheaper)... some gravel would be your cheapest alternative, and work just as well(if not better as its smaller and you could fit more pieces in!) hope my info helps you!

the water pressure seems quite sstrong for the 29 gallon. maybe if i get some plants to put under the flow it might not be soo powerful. its hard to find nice looking fake plants.
