Filter Questions

Hi Everyone, I have another question about the filter setup on my 55 gallon tank. So far I have a Aqua Clear 70 and a Rena XP2. I was thinking about adding another powerfilter to the tank since I have some messy fish.

Anyway since you don't need carbon in your filter, I was think about adding another foam block to my Aqua Clear filters, do you think that will work?

And for the Rena XP2, I have the 4 foam pads, bio stars, and the "micro filtration" pads currently running on that filter. My quetion is do you use any of thier products such a "Nitrazorb," I think the spelling may be off, Ect?
Thanks!

Hello Wolf,

Yes, you can add another sponge or bio cubes any type of media you want to your AC70.

I'll have to let someone else respond on your other filter.

I don't use carbon in any of my tanks. In my ACs, I add extra bags of biomax, with a piece of filter floss between the sponge and biomax. That has to get changed every few weeks. I also put a lot of extra biomax in my XPs.

As for nitra zorb, I prefer to let the biofilter do it's job. A good strong biofilter and large regular water changes are the way to go, IMO.

+1, great advice.

I use 2 foam blocks in some of my Aquaclears since I also don't run carbon. It works just fine, or the filter floss is a great idea too.

Yep you can add another foam block like said.

Filter floss will also help polish up your water, with any filter.

Nitrazorb removes the food supply for your bacteria potentially allowing them to starve off. Then when the zorb has removed its limit and stops working, there wouldnt be enough bacteria left to keep the levels down. Seems like creating a problem to me.

Ok Thanks for the advice, I'll add another foam block to my AC and hold off from the Nitrazorb or anything else of that nature. It seems like all of those products really dont benfit anything

Also is filter floss the same thing that Rena sells calling it "micro filtration?"

Not sure but if you go to a fish shop they should have bags of it.

A big bag should be under $5.

It is sort of like the filling for a pillow.
