Aqua Clear Surface Skimmer

Good morning.

I have Aqua Clear (AC) filters of all sizes on all of my tanks. I just ran across a thread where the poster is dealing with surface scum and the member also has AC filtration. This is what I recommend to resolve the surface scum issues:

http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/215392/product.web

Drsfostersmith.com has the same product but it isn't stated that it's for Aqua Clears. I have both and both do well on my AC filters. Drsfostersmith I'm not able to pull up on line but it's on page 16 of their catalog. They also state that they can be attached to canister filters. (haven't tried that myself).

This skimmer does a great job. Sometimes I have to fiddle with it to get the clear plastic piece to float so that it stays on top of the water. If a fish bumps the clear plastic piece or if you have your hands in the tank and create a big wave it may drop down under the water. It's well worth it though Too, it adds additional oxygen into the water due to the fact it has the trickle down effect. Reasonably priced!

Wanted to share this for those of you that may have this same issue.
Ken

Good morning Carol.

I first noticed surface scum on my 29 tank I use to prefilter water for my water changes. It wasn't a great deal of scum but I could still tell that it was there, even with the AC 50 filter running. So I figured if I had surface scum there that I would have some on my other tanks mainly the gold fish tank. Sure enough I could see some so I added the surface skimmer to that tanks filter too. No more scum
My 265g tank has a HOB over flow system so there is no scum there period yeah!!
Wriggley's betta tank doesn't have any scum and I don't use the surface skimmer on that tank.
Too, I have well water and I can see the silt as it settles and what doesn't sink floats and goes down the surface skimmer.

I can pull up Drsfostersmith.com with no problem but I couldn't get it to pull up the surface skimmer. I also tried a search by item # and it wouldn't come up.

FIY- drsfosterandsmith's new site just went live. That's probably why you had the issues getting the item up, I placed an order yesterday and had a dickens of a time.

Thanks for the heads up about the skimmer, I'm ordering one for my betta tank, the low flow on my AC in there has allowed a little surface skim and I trust this will clear that up pretty quick.

Thanks DavidC,
I was finally able access everything this morning. Since you are going to place one in your betta tank I would recommend adding a sponge to the bottom of the skimmer to prevent fin damage and so the betta doesn't get sucked to it. I added one to the skimmer in my Gold Fish tank just to add more housing for good bacteria colonies. Works great!
