UV filters

I was wondering if anyone uses as UV filter, and if so what do you us it for and how do you like it? The reason that I ask is because I have been looking at building one.

I use one on my tank that gets direct sunlight and haven't had an algae problem since....or any other problem for that matter. I believe it also kills parasites.

It supposed to kill and living organism. So all the bacteria, and such we use them here at work but I wasn't sure about on a fish tank.
