Sponge to cover Filter Intake

So I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get cheap sponges that i could cut holes in to put on the intake of my filters. Anywhere i go they are quite expensive so i was wondering if anyone had a cheaper alternative sponge?

Try some aquarium filter 'cotton wool', tie it with an elastic band or something. That should be dirt cheap

I put a clean, never seen soap knee hi panty hose over one of my intakes.
I keep it in place with a rubber band.

Whenever I see sponges on sale for cheap, I pick them up no matter what filter they fit.
They always come in handy.

Good ideas above!
These sponges aren't a lot of money and they are for sure "aquarium safe":

I use aquaclear sponges also. You can also buy a roll of the filter floss, its blue on one side and white on the other side. It comes in a roll for 6.99 and you can cut to fit. It will last for a long time as mine has for at least a year.

Yeah im not a big fan of the filter floss for covering the filter intake...i actually used it to revamp my tetratech pf150 filter however, and found it quite useful

Im going to be trying the Laguna replacement strainer I found at PetSmart today. I think they will reduce the intake less than the AC sponge and be more reusable via rinsing.

and with songes, you probably dont have to cut them you might just be able to slide knife into one end and work apart enough to slide over the intake and tie it off.

i got one just like this from petco for my fry tank to stop them from getting sucked in. it works well and dose not reduce filter flow much (i actauly wanted it to too reduce current, but it dosnet at all lol) it was only $1.99

it was called like "benifical bacteria filter foam" or something
