Filtration limit?

Ok you know the old saying that no question is a dumb "stupid, bad ect.." question right? haha sorry i just keep thinking about it that. Is it possible to have TOO much filtration? Sure iv seen some crazy things "got a funny story w/ that lol" But can you do to much?

And if you put a new filter on an established tank "in conjunction with old filter" how long would it take to set up the new one?

In my opinion, 'too much' filtration is when due to the water pressure, the fish have problems swimming around. You can have 'wasted' filtration, but I don't think its possible for it to be too clean. After all filters remove solid waste (good), and remove ammonia (very good).

i was actually wondering the exact same thing. i have a 20g tank and a marina filter for the 20g tank (included in the starter kit) plus a newly installed AC70. water is a little grey and was wondering that perhaps its because of the new AC70.

The grey water could either be dust from the gravel, or a bacterial bloom (which is a good sign) - both will go away with time.

i know a guy who had atleast a 300g tank custom...he also made his own filtration and the pump on the dang thing was insane....the water would slope on one side and the Angels "he was a breeder" would swim for there life...he litteraly only turned it on for maybe 2 min a day........

How do you ever get a cycled tank this way?

I don't think you can literally have too much. The bacteria would adjust with the filter. too clean and some would die back.

In pracatice you need enough to handle the bio-load of your fish and plants. I believe that is where "the gallons per hour" guidelines come into effect. If slightly over stocked or heavey bio load fish, then filtration or water changes should be increased.

It is all a balancing act trying to reproduce a healthy natural enviroment for our fish.
