Ok... I'm still definitely new! I've just rec'd (as a matter of minutes ago) a 55 gallon tank that my older brother had for his fish (has been in his basement for a few years). All I need to get is a filter system.... I'm on a tight budget & was wondering if someone can recommend a good filter system that is reasonable priced? I've looked on Petco & Petsmart (and there are so many to choose from)... HELP!

welcome to fishlore marry! i would try looking online for a filter, as you will get at least half off store price and still be new or hardly used! some of the main brands you might look for are, fluval aquaclear and emperor/penguin good luck on your filter hunt.

I'd recommend an aquaclear 110 HOB filter for a 55. Check out e-bay or a couple online stores for the best deal, but you won't find a better filter for the price IMO.

You can go for an emperor 400, I have it running on my dad's 40g. It's rated for 30-80g's 400gph. Really quite and easy to clean! Also has a spraybar and two bio wheel as well as a intake extension for tall tanks.

Great suggestions above. Get any of the filters above. Just remember, to be on the safe side, get a filter that requires less than what it's used for. Example, you have a 55g, get a filter rated for more than that, like 75g. Good luck on the filter hunt and be sure to update us

Welcome to Fishlore! I run two filters on all of my tanks except my betta and "JD fry" tank. As long as you have between 440-550gph on a 55 gallon tank, you should be fine. Filter brands (as you can see by the advice above) seem to be a matter of personal preference.
