We do 10 gallon water changes every two weeks. We try to do weekly changes... but with a busy family life sometimes we don't always get to them every weekend. We replaced our carbon with an extra sponge for the filter and we rinse them out every
water change and do a more extensive cleaning every other water change.
We have a large number of plants... several vals, 2 varieties of java fern, 2 anubius, two water onions, a sword and this bulb plant that is a super fast grower. We also have duck weed in the tank that hitched a ride with our water onion...but I scoop it out often so that it doesn't block out light.
Our thought was that since the tank is so deep that maybe we weren't getting good filtration with the aquaclear by taxing it a bit extra with the longer intake tube... but if extra filtration is not the answer to our nitrate problem... then I guess our only option is to do the weekly changes... and try to do a better job of cleaning up the substrate... although that is tough in such a heavily planted hex.
We really thought that the extra planting would go a long way to solve our problem. We have more than tripled the number of plants in the tank in the past three months... but so far they don't seem to be doing much for the levels.
