need a REALLY quiet filter

So I'm trying to help my sister out with her fish as much as I can. She currently has a feeder goldfish and a betta in a 2.5 gallon tank

I'm giving her a bigger tank for the goldie but I'm going to need to get her a filter as well. The thing is she's living in a dorm at her college so the filter is going to have to be REALLY quiet. The dorm is small and she also shares it with another person so is there any filter that doesn't really make noise?

Thanks for any help,
Rachel

EDIT: my sis just sent me some pictures of her tank. She drew the background herself lol. This is dragon(betta) and little(goldie)

Do you have the money to buy canister filters? If so those are quiet, but I think Ken and a few others said that Aquaclears are also quiet which are HOB. Nice background! and well prepared for the holiday.

I'm kinda on a budget so I don't think I'll get a canister filter.
Thanks for the suggestions eiginh.

What's your budget and how big is the tank?

Well I don't want to spend a whole lot on the filter, maybe $20? more or less.

The tank I'm giving her a 10 gallon tank. I know goldfish need a 20 but the 10 is all that I have.

Hmm, good luck for buying a filter for a goldfish! They are mass waste producers. Not sure about feeders though so hopefully you'll get lucky. Search up on internal filters, I read those are quiet too!

This is a little extra but it's well worth it. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...m?pcatid=16742 Here is a whisper internal filter, I read mixed reviews with them being so silent "whisper" http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...m?pcatid=12086

A Whisper Ex20 would probably be sufficient if your friend stays on top of water changes on the 10 gal (50% weekly I'd recommend). It's listed as 21.99 here: http://www.aquariumguys.com/whisperpower3.html

Or you could go for the Ex30 for 26.99 which would be even better for the goldie and would allow a little more leeway on water changes.

From what I've heard these are very quiet as long as you keep the water level high. The more evaporation you get the more water trickle noise you get. Other than that the filters a pretty silent. I have an EX10 on one of my tanks as extra filtration and it makes barely more than a hum.
