Not sure if this is a Filter or a Pump question.....

Hello. I've recently joined this Forum and think the advice is fantastic. My question relates to our Juwel Vision 260 litre tank. We originally set it up back in 2003 and then in 2005/2006 (can't quite remember which year) we had a total disaster and lost every single fish overnight ~ came down one morning to every single one floating at the top. We never actually managed to find out what happened.... might have been the cheap fish food Tony bought (never again!)... might have been the most stupidist of things we could have ever thought of doing and that was to leave some firelighters on the top and a few crumbs may have fallen in the water (I have a sneaky feeling this may have been it). Anyway, to cut a long story short, we had to start over again completely afresh.

Happily we have gradually built up our current stock over the 3 or 4 years and so far so good. (Firelighters stay IN THE coal bucket and cheap fish food is banned LOL).

I don't know if anyone else has a Juwel ~ there is a static black unit in the back right hand corner which houses the filters (four large open density, two medium density and one small white one on top), the pump which has a hose into the tank pushing the water up to the top and the heater.

I was wondering if it would be beneficial to add another pump at the back left corner as this is definately the area with the least water movement. We have got a 6" air thingey under the gravel which is supposed to be a "wall" of bubbles, but we now get only about an inch or so of bubbles coming up. I am guessing it probably needs replacing?

Many thanks for any advice and apologies for such a long post !

Sorry you lost your fish, I don't think it was the cheap fish food that killed your fish over night. Your bubble wand seems like its clogged so you might need to buy a new one or use a needle and poke more holes in it but that will take awhile. It can also be that your air pump isn't strong enough. You can buy a water pump to increase circulation in your tank. Can you take pictures of your filter? I can see it online but it's not really defined what the parts inside look like.

Thanks for such a speedy response! I will get the camera out later (or tomorrow) and take some pictures. Do photos have to be a certain size to be able to post?

Thanks
Hils

Yes, it can't be over 976.6 KB but you can go to picresize.com or use the program Paint if you have Windows to resize your pic.

Hi Hillie, i have a rio 240 and they have changed the power heads on thee newer juwels. I have a bio-flo 3.0 in mine and it filters 600 litres an hour and the flo it kicks out is plenty. Apart from yours being a bow front it is basicaly the same as mine. Ask your local LFS if you can upgrade your power head to fit in the filter system, i'm sure you can. Cheaper than installing a new filter. Hope this helps.
Nick.

actually, just to confirm I know which part you mean.... is it the pump head the little motor with a fan in the bottom that zooms round? (sorry, you can probably guess I'm not very technically minded! LOL). Cheers. Hils.

Am now poor. LOL. Went to LFS and bought a brand new pump head. Thanks for your help Nick. Was told by LFS that originally my Juwel Vision 260 would have been supplied with a 1000 pump, but the newer models are supplied with 600 pump. Bit the bullet and bought a new 1000 pump and GOSH what a difference! Also got a 4ft water tube thingey to have a wall of bubbles. Got home, fixed it to the pump and only a couple of bubbles came up, so Tone has ordered a new pump from ebay.

My next purchase will be new tube lights... I think we'll go for the new High Lite ones.

Any comments on these?

Thought maybe a daytime one and a colour one.

Any advice gratefully received!

Thanks for your help so far.

Cheers. Hils.

thanks for the welcome Ken! Will try and get some decent photos taken tomorrow and then post them. Will I do that in this thread, or is there a specific one for photos only?

Thanks!

Hi Hillie, glad i could help. Yes mate do go for the high lites as they are very good, thats what i have in my rio 240. I use natural and daylight as these bring out the colours of my fish. The colour bulb only hilights certain colours like blue and red so your better off with the more natural ones. Good luck and speak soon.
