No bio fiber

I got my tank and filter from a friend. However, the filter system doesn't have the bio fiber in it, just the used filter cartridge. I bought new ones but I was wondering if it's okay not to have the bio fiber stuff.

that would probably depend on the population of the tank. If it's a busy tank, there will be that much more waste, which needs more removal of solid particulates. However, if there's only a few fish, and you don't overfeed the tank the single cartridge might be ok. But it too, still should be changed every 3-4 weeks.

It's so easy and useful to replace the permanent biofiber, I would suggest doing so. It is really useful for maintaining the beneficial bacteria in your tank, especially if you need/want to change the substrate or decor.

It's really easy to do though. Just about every pet store sells filter fiber for just a couple bucks for big bag. Then you can cut a strip and make your own perm bio filter. (Actually, I do that also for my replaceable filters - so much cheaper and you can control whether or not you use carbon and the type of filter fiber you want to use. )

Hello Rainbow.
Can you tell us what type of filter you have? Are you referring to filter floss when you speak of bio fiber, or bio fiber as in sponges?

I recommend having as much bio media as you can possibly fit into your filter. The more surface area you have in your tank and filter the better off your tank and fish are going to be. More surface area = more biological bacteria/filtration. Too, should you ever want to start another tank by "seeding" it then you have the extra bio media to use.

Congrats on the new tank!
Ken

I actually don't know because the slot was empty for the bio fiber when I got it. I have an Aqua Tech 20-40 filter.

Now, I used the old filter when I started it but the tank has been up for about three weeks now and I'm still using the old fiber. However, I really think I should change the filter because it's really old and I've rinsed it. Will that be safe?

And thank you for the suggestions about the bio fiber! I guess I can buy the sponge kind and cut the size that I need.

I just kind of need to know if it's okay to change the filter. Also, I'm due for a 20% water change and a vacuum. Will it be okay to do all that at the same time or should I do one first before the other? If so, what should I do first?
