| noisy filters! i have 2 aqua-tech 30-60 filters on my 55 gallon tank and they are driving me crazy!
they were so quiet for the longest time, then one got so nosiy that it was just too much to take. i boxed it up and exchanged it. the new one was quiet for a few days now it is getting really noisy too. the other one, the one i've had all along, is also starting to get noisy, but the one is just so loud you i can't even leave it runnng.
i did switch to sand but i was very careful not to allow any particles to get sucked into the filter, and they both ran quietly for a few weeks after the switch before i started getting all the noise. it sounds like something is grinding, but i've taken them all apart, cleaned them and checked the tubes. they are clean and clear. what could be causing this |

| Whats the noise sound like? If its coming from the motor it could be the impeller has worn in a weird way and is causing water turbulance making it noisy.
If your worried about the sand causing the problem you could put a sponge on the filter intake, that would stop a lot of the silt and such from entering the actual internal parts and wearing it in a way to make noise.
The impeller might also not be seated in the housing correctly and be vibrating against the plastic.
Just some thoughts. |

| when i reseat the tubing it gets better if i put pressure on it. it's still kind of loud, but not nearly as bad. i don't know how to put it in more perfectly than it is. |

| Take the whole filter apart... the tubes, the impeller, clean out where the impeller goes really well. More than likely no matter how careful you are without a prefilter you probably got sand in there. The sand could be getting grinded around in there or it may have worn the impeller and you will need to replace it.

| ok i know this is stupid but which part is the impeller? the actual tiny little box underneath? that's the only thing it could be.. |

| The impeller is the little fan thing usually at the very bottom of all the tubes and stuff. |

| where my tube seats down into the actual box, i have the piece that spins. i have rinsed it and rinsed it and rinsed it and it gets a little better (for a while) each time but after a while it's as loud as ever. |

| When you take off the lift tube...the tube that goes from inside your filter then bends and goes down into your tank. Take that out, now where it came from, in the filter housing, there should be another piece that holds that tube in the filter housing. pull that out also. Now down below that piece there is a little propeller looking thing. Pull that out also, that is the impeller. When you clean your filter housing now that everything is out of it, clean way down in that hole you created by removing everything, there is probably sand down in there.

| you need to remove that piece that spins so you can clean down there better, you are on the right track. When you put it back together..... mount that spinner onto the piece that goes above it and put those 2 pieces back into the filter housing as one piece. Because if the impeller and that other piece don't have a snug fit it will make noise also.

Brian | the tube that comes out (that goes into the tank)... at the bottom of the tube there is a little propeller. it's attached to the side of the tube that attaches down into the filter... i'm wondering if something else comes out from where that tube/propeller sits down into the body of the filter
i really appreciate your help and your patience with me. obviously i'm not too sharp on this stuff. |

| Just take as much out of the filter housing that comes out....... freely dont start ripping the whole thing apart.
Make note of how it came out so you know how to put it back together again.
It should help a great deal.

| if that bottom motor comes off by twisting it like it does with an aquaclear filter go for it.
If not try buying a new impeller for your model filter, sometimes the impeller wears and need replacing. When it wears it gets noisy.
Use a q-tip and clean real good down in that section that you labelled will not come out.

| ^^ i've tried but it feels like i'm going to have to be forecful when removing it, and i'm afraid it's just going to break off when it's not meant to be removed. |
